Electrical Design Engineer – Nuclear
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership in the design, analysis, modification, testing, and implementation of electrical power systems and equipment within a nuclear power environment.
This position will support complex engineering projects involving electrical distribution systems, transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, motor control centers, generators, and associated power equipment. The engineer will serve as a technical resource throughout the engineering change lifecycle, ensuring designs meet applicable codes, standards, licensing requirements, and configuration control processes.
The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of electrical engineering experience, strong power systems knowledge, and the ability to independently develop and review complex engineering modifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engineering change/design modification packages, calculations, specifications, drawings, and supporting documentation.
- Perform electrical power system studies, including:
- Load flow
- Short-circuit analysis
- Protective device coordination
- Arc flash evaluations
- Voltage drop analysis
- Evaluate, size, and specify electrical equipment, including:
- Transformers
- Switchgear
- Circuit breakers
- Protective relays
- Motor control centers (MCCs)
- Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
- Generators and auxiliary power equipment
- Develop design inputs and perform technical evaluations against established design basis requirements.
- Read, interpret, review, and develop plant drawings, including one-line diagrams, control wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, electrical elementary diagrams, and connection diagrams.
- Review and/or produce Engineering Change (EC) base documents, equipment database records, wire tabs, Bills of Materials, and cable cards.
- Prepare technical specifications and procurement documentation for new equipment and system modifications.
- Perform design reviews, technical verifications, and engineering change evaluations.
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and post-modification testing.
- Maintain configuration control by ensuring drawings, calculations, equipment databases, and other design documentation are updated following modifications.
- Coordinate with project management, operations, maintenance, vendors, and other engineering disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced engineers.
- Work independently with limited supervision while maintaining ownership and accountability for assigned projects.

Qualifications
- 10+ years of electrical engineering discipline experience
- Experience supporting complex electrical design and modification projects
- Strong understanding of applicable electrical codes and standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NFPA, and NESC
- Experience working with engineering change and configuration management processes
- Ability to independently solve complex engineering problems with limited supervision
- Strong technical documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Highly Desired Qualifications
- Previous nuclear power plant/site experience
- Knowledge of the Standard Design Process
- Previous Duke Energy experience
- Experience with switchyard and/or transmission-related Engineering Changes
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, or PowerWorld
- Experience designing or applying transformers, switchgear, protective relays, generators, or related electrical equipment
- Experience within nuclear, utility, renewable energy, or large industrial plant environments
- Knowledge of electrical equipment commissioning and testing practices
- Familiarity with nuclear licensing and design-basis requirements
Duke Energy Qualifications – Highly Desired
Previous qualification or experience with the following is strongly preferred:
- CO-FLT-ENG-2000 – Design Change / Engineering Change Preparation
- FLT-ENG-DIGITAL-EC – Digital Engineering Changes
- CO-FLT-ENG-2050 – Design Verification
- CO-FLT-AD – Applicability Determination Preparer
- CO-FLT-50.59-SCR – 50.59 Screener
