Start a Career, Not Just a Job

The fastest route to a journeyman's license runs through a job site, not a classroom. Ogburn Electric is a trusted electrical contractor serving Winston-Salem and the Triad, and we've been doing it right for 70 years - quality workmanship, strong safety standards, and integrity on every job.

Our Commercial Construction division is looking for motivated Electrical Apprentices who want to learn a skilled trade, get paid while they learn, and build a career with real room to grow. No license needed - just a good attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn.

    About the Role

As an Electrical Apprentice, you'll work alongside experienced journeymen and foremen on commercial job sites, learning the trade from the ground up - from rough-in through trim-out. You'll start with the basics and take on more as your skills grow. Every day is hands-on, and every day you'll learn something new.

This is an outdoor, on-your-feet role. If you like working with your hands and seeing real progress at the end of the day, you'll feel right at home.

    What You'll Do

Learn the Trade on the Job

    - Assist journeymen and foremen with installing conduit (EMT, MC, PVC, and rigid), wire, boxes, panels, lighting, and devices.

    - Learn to measure, cut, bend, and thread conduit under supervision.

    - Pull wire, mount fixtures, and help terminate circuits as your skills develop.

    - Begin learning to read blueprints, electrical plans, and the National Electrical Code (NEC).

    Support the Crew

    - Load, unload, stage, and organize materials and tools so the crew stays productive.

    - Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe.

    - Help with jobsite setup, including ladders, lifts, and temporary power.

    - Work at grade level, on ladders and lifts, and occasionally in ditches or trenches.

    Safety & Professionalism

    - Follow all safety rules and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

    - Show up on time, ready to work, and represent Ogburn Electric well with GCs, customers, and inspectors.

    - Ask questions, take direction, and apply feedback from your foreman and journeymen.

    - Help maintain company tools and equipment.

    What We're Looking For

    Requirements

    - 18 years or older with a high school diploma or GED.

    - Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites.

    - Ability to do physical work: lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work at heights, bend, kneel, and stand for long periods.

    - Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

    - Basic math skills and the ability to use a tape measure.

    - Dependable, coachable, and eager to learn a skilled trade.

    - Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

    Nice to Have (Not Required)

    - Some construction or electrical experience, even as a helper.

    - Electrical coursework from a high school CTE program, Forsyth Tech, or another community college.

    - Your own basic hand tools.

    - OSHA 10 certification.

The Kind of Person Who Thrives Here

    - You take pride in your work and like doing things the right way.

    - You're curious - you want to know how things work and why.

    - You're a team player who shows up for your crew.

    - You're thinking long-term: journeyman, then foreman, and beyond.

    What We Offer

    - Competitive starting pay with raises tied to your skills, hours, and progress.

    - Paid on-the-job training from experienced, licensed electricians.

    - Support toward classroom training on your path to becoming a licensed electrician.

    - A clear career path: Apprentice to Journeyman to Foreman to Project Management.

    - Benefits package including medical coverage and paid time off.

    - Access to modern tools and equipment.

    - A stable, team-oriented company that values craftsmanship, safety, and community - celebrating 70 years in the Triad.

    Bottom Line

If you're ready to trade a dead-end job for a real career - and you want to learn from people who take pride in their craft - this is your chance. We'll invest in you. All you need to bring is the drive to learn.

    How to Apply

Applying is quick and easy. You'll be invited to complete a short video interview (easy to do from your phone) and a brief assessment before moving to an in-person interview. Completing both steps gives you priority in the hiring process.
