Job Title: Electrical Apparatus Testing Technician
Job Description
The Electrical Apparatus Testing Technician supports field testing, maintenance, and commissioning of power system equipment across substations, utilities, and industrial sites. This role focuses on ensuring the safe, reliable operation of low, medium, and high-voltage equipment while working on both greenfield and brownfield substations at various stages of energization. The position offers exposure to high-voltage, utility-scale projects and a clear career path into advanced technical and leadership roles.
Responsibilities
- Perform testing, maintenance, and commissioning of circuit breakers across low, medium, and high-voltage systems.
- Test and maintain pad-mounted and power transformers to ensure reliable operation and compliance with standards.
- Conduct testing and diagnostics on current transformers (CTs) and potential transformers (PTs).
- Support testing and maintenance of substation equipment, including components in both greenfield and brownfield substations.
- Perform testing of low, medium, and high-voltage power cables, including insulation and integrity assessments.
- Test and verify ground grid systems to ensure proper grounding and system safety.
- Conduct oil sampling and diagnostics on transformers and related equipment to identify potential issues and support predictive maintenance.
- Work within three-phase electrical systems, interpreting system behavior and applying appropriate testing techniques.
- Follow and execute lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety protocols to ensure safe work practices around energized and partially energized equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems and identify issues in breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs, cables, and substation equipment.
- Support power systems commissioning activities, including verification, documentation, and coordination with other field personnel.
- Travel to job sites across Colorado, and occasionally out of state, to perform field testing and commissioning services.
- Collaborate with other technicians, engineers, and field personnel to complete projects safely, on time, and in accordance with technical and safety standards.
- Document test results, findings, and recommendations in a clear and accurate manner for reporting and future reference.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on electrical apparatus testing experience, specifically beyond general electrician work.
- Experience working with circuit breakers, including low, medium, and high-voltage equipment.
- Experience testing and maintaining transformers, including pad-mounted and power transformers.
- Experience with CTs and PTs, including testing and diagnostics in substation environments.
- Experience performing cable testing on low, medium, and high-voltage power cables.
- Ability to work safely in energized and partially energized substations and power system environments.
- Familiarity with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and safety protocols for electrical work.
- Ability to understand and interpret three-phase electrical systems.
- Experience with power systems commissioning activities.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems and identify faults in field environments.
- Approximately 5+ years of electrical testing experience preferred, with flexibility for strong candidates with slightly less experience.
- Comfort working in field environments such as substations and industrial sites.
- Willingness and ability to travel to job sites within Colorado, with occasional out-of-state travel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- NETA certification, which can offset years of experience requirements.
- NICET certification, which can also offset years of experience requirements.
- Experience with relay testing as part of broader power systems testing and commissioning.
- Familiarity with diagnostics techniques, including oil sampling and analysis for transformers and related equipment.
- Interest in career growth into roles such as Relay Technician, Project Manager, Field Service Manager, or Operations Manager.
- Experience working on utility-scale, high-voltage projects.
- Strong safety mindset and adherence to established safety protocols in field environments.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role primarily working in substations and industrial environments, with a mix of energized and non-energized systems. The position can be based in either the Denver or Colorado Springs area.
