The EKG Technician is responsible for performing electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) tests and related cardiac diagnostic procedures to assist physicians and healthcare providers in evaluating patients' heart conditions. The technician ensures accurate test results, maintains patient comfort, and follows established clinical and safety procedures.
Perform 12-lead EKG/ECG tests on patients according to physician orders.
Prepare patients for cardiac diagnostic procedures and explain testing procedures.
Properly place electrodes and operate EKG equipment to obtain accurate recordings.
Monitor patients during testing and identify abnormal readings that require immediate clinical attention.
Perform or assist with Holter monitor placement, event monitoring, and stress testing when required.
Ensure EKG recordings are complete, accurate, and properly documented.
Upload, record, and maintain patient test results in the electronic medical record (EMR/EHR) system.
Maintain and clean EKG machines, cables, electrodes, and related equipment.
Follow infection-control, patient-safety, HIPAA, and hospital policies.
Coordinate with nurses, physicians, cardiology staff, and other healthcare professionals.
Respond appropriately to emergency situations and report critical findings to the appropriate clinical staff.
Maintain adequate supplies required for EKG procedures.
High school diploma or GED required.
Completion of an EKG Technician or cardiovascular technology training program preferred.
EKG Technician certification such as CET, CCT, or equivalent preferred or required depending on employer.
BLS/CPR certification preferred.
Previous hospital, clinic, cardiology, or patient-care experience is an advantage.
Knowledge of EKG/ECG procedures and cardiac rhythms.
Ability to correctly position electrodes and operate EKG equipment.
Basic knowledge of cardiac anatomy and medical terminology.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with patients of different ages and medical conditions.
Ability to recognize potentially abnormal or urgent cardiac readings and promptly notify clinical staff.
Basic computer and electronic medical record skills.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to assist with positioning and transferring patients when necessary.
Ability to lift or move medical equipment and supplies.
Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
EKG Technicians may work in hospitals, emergency departments, outpatient clinics, cardiology departments, diagnostic centers, and physician offices. The position may require evening, weekend, holiday, or on-call shifts depending on facility requirements.
