EHS Manager

Description

The EHS Manager’s primary objective is to protect and enhance workplace health and safety, environmental protection, and security through risk prevention, fostering a culture of caring where safety is ingrained as a core value.  This position champions safety and sets strategies for overall success in alignment with corporate policies, initiatives, goals, and objectives.   

Primary Responsibilities: 

• Provide EHS guidance and support to all CMC locations but based primarily out of the Bellwood/Elgin/Sycamore/Hampshire general areas in Illinois.  
• Provide a visible floor presence to facilitate safety engagement.
• Support and drive positive safety culture actions and initiatives. 
• Serve as Liaison to local fire departments, publicly owned wastewater treatment plants, and Illinois State Fire Marshal (boilers and pressure vessels).
• Lead monthly safety committee meetings and Gemba walks.
• Oversee relative aspects of environmental compliance, including air, wastewater, and stormwater permit maintenance and compliance, including sampling, review of analytical results, driving compliance with permit conditions and participating in new permit applications.  
• Oversee hazardous, non-hazardous, and universal waste management programs.
• Lead, guide, and drive compliance to meet OSHA General Industry, NFPA, or other health and safety regulations and requirements and corporate safety initiatives. 
• Participate in providing new hire safety, contractor safety, and monthly training.  Coordinates third-party specialty training.  Updates training modules to keep them current and develops new training modules for continuous improvement.  Maintains training records using Quality Management Systems (QT9).   
• Oversee PPE management and distribution programs, seek continuous improvement in PPE offerings.  
• Prepare reports and maintain site OSHA and incident logs. Conduct and facilitate incident investigations of incidents and near misses using an on-line system.  Prepare Safety Alerts. 
• Manage Workers Compensation cases. 
• Update and maintain emergency response programs.  Conduct drills, e.g., evacuations and shelter-in-place. 
• Provide on-site support for larger construction projects that involve life-critical permits (confined space, excavation, LOTO, electrical).
• Collaborate with Maintenance to meet applicable permit and inspection requirements, i.e., CO2 fire suppression, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, fire alarms, and smoke detectors.
• Conduct annual confined space and LOTO equipment procedure audits.   
• Maintain chemical inventories using an on-line system.  Conducts annual hazardous chemical inventories.  
• Facilitate periodic JSA reviews.
• Participate in EHS Security oversight, including response to security incidents, management of access control systems, and occasional video surveillance.
• Issue purchase orders in support of safety initiatives.   
• Coordinate, as applicable, industrial hygiene exposure surveys (noise, air pollutants, asbestos).  
• Other duties may be assigned. 

Education and Experience: 

• Bachelor Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Technology/Engineering or EHS-related field; experience may substitute in lieu of degree. 
• 5+ years of experience in progressive health and safety and environmental compliance and security roles. 
• Experience with EHS Managements Systems and Learning Management Systems.
• Knowledgeable in basic OSHA 29 CFR 1910 et seq regulations and compliance, especially machine guarding, control of hazardous energy, electrical safety/Arc Flash NFPA 70E, hazard communication, cranes/powered industrial trucks, and personal protective equipment. 
• Familiarity with OSHA 29 CFR 1904 and 1926 et seq. 
• Familiarity with DOT HAZMAT regulations.
• Experience with SharePoint for document management.
• Experience with core environmental regulatory areas, such as RCRA, CWA, CAA, SARA and EPCRA. 
• Familiarity with managing regulatory agency and insurance provider inspections and visits.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams); EHS Management Systems, Learning Management Systems, and abilities to master other specialized software, e.g., keycard and camera access control systems.

• Able to interact with co-workers with tact and motivation to achieve desired results without direct authority. 
• Flexible with abilities to prioritize, manage multiple tasks concurrently, and keep pace with projects and initiatives.  
• Able to determine applicable regulatory requirements and communicate in lay terms. 
• Strong verbal/written, analytical and problem-solving skills.   
• Spanish Speaking preferred.

Position has Matrixed Reporting Structure: 

• Direct line report to Director, Environmental, Health and Safety & Security as direct line. 
• Dotted line indirect report to site General Managers.   
• Role is an Individual Contributor. 
• Safety Specialist, Summer Safety Intern, as applicable, indirect report. 

Work Environment 

• This position operates in a professional office environment that routinely uses standard office equipment.  

Physical Demands 

• While performing the duties of the job the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, talk, see and hear without assistance.  The employee may occasionally be asked to lift or move items related to their EHS duties weighing up to 40 lbs.  
• Able to travel drive, fly as needed.

 Travel Expected: 

• 30-45% local travel between IL facilities. 
• Occasional remote work upon management approval.
