EEG Technologist

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES:

QUALIFICATIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Verify the insurance requirements, medical order, and protocol.
• Complete and verify documentation.
• Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the Sleep & Neurodiagnostic Center.
• Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and adjust if necessary.
• Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
• Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and adjust if necessary.
• Follow procedural protocols such as electroencephalogram (EEG) tests to ensure collection of appropriate data.
• Perform EEG data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and adjust, if necessary.
• Document routine observations including clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of EEG results.
• Develop and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Perform routine inpatient and outpatient EEG recordings and extended EEG recordings according to departmental protocols and accepted neurodiagnostic standards.
• Perform long-term video EEG (LTM) monitoring, including multi-day studies, and maintain recording quality throughout the monitoring period.
• Accurately measure and apply electrodes according to the International 10-20 System and maintain appropriate electrode impedances.
• Obtain and document pertinent patient history, medications, neurological symptoms, seizure/event descriptions, level of alertness, and other information relevant to physician interpretation.
• Perform activation procedures such as photic stimulation and hyperventilation when ordered and clinically appropriate.
• Continuously monitor EEG signal quality and recognize, troubleshoot, and correct electrode, physiologic, movement, environmental, and equipment artifact.
• Monitor and document patient state, behavior, clinical events, event-button activations, activation procedures, and significant changes occurring during the recording.
• Recognize normal EEG patterns and variants and identify potentially abnormal or significant electrographic patterns requiring annotation or escalation according to departmental protocol.
• Review completed routine and extended EEG recordings for technical adequacy and ensure relevant events, artifacts, activation procedures, and observations are appropriately annotated before physician interpretation.
• Review, annotate, and prune long-term video EEG recordings to identify and organize clinically relevant electrographic and clinical events for physician review while preserving the complete original recording.
• Correlate patient-reported, staff-observed, and event-button clinical events with corresponding EEG and video data.
• Maintain electrodes during multi-day LTM studies, including impedance checks, electrode repair/reapplication, artifact correction, and maintenance of video/audio recording quality.
• Prepare EEG and LTM studies for physician interpretation by ensuring recordings are technically complete, appropriately annotated, and organized for efficient physician review.
• Communicate potentially significant or urgent observations to the interpreting physician or appropriate clinical team according to departmental policy.
• Serve as a technical resource for EEG procedures, electrode application, Natus software, recording techniques, montages, artifact recognition, troubleshooting, and recording quality.
• Assist with EEG quality assurance by reviewing technical quality, documentation, electrode application, artifact, and adherence to departmental protocols.
• Assist with development and standardization of EEG policies, procedures, protocols, competencies, and documentation practices.
• Provide technical education, mentoring, orientation, and competency support to less experienced or non-registered EEG staff as assigned.
• Clean and disinfect EEG equipment, electrodes, and accessories according to infection-control standards and manufacturer recommendations.
• Maintain professional competency through continuing education and current knowledge of EEG/neurodiagnostic practices.
• Participate in the rotating EEG on-call schedule, including weekend coverage and urgent inpatient EEG procedures as assigned.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Registered EEG Technologist (R.EEG T.) - Strongly Preferred

ADDITIONAL LICENSUREICREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

• High School education required
• Associates degree (preferred)
• Demonstrates knowledge and technical skills necessary for providing competent, comprehensive patient care. 
• May be required to meet education requirements to become a registered technologist. 
  • EEG credentialing may be required within certain time frames.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Mandatory Continuing Education: Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Corporate Compliance (including Confidentiality), Infection Control, and education required by regulatory, accreditation bodies, scope of practice, and/or Hancock Regional Hospital.  

• EEG credentialing is required. The EEG Technologist is required to take and pass the EEG Exam or equivalent exam provided by ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation by following one of their listed eligibility pathways. This may require taking an ABRET recognized program, obtaining an associate’s degree, or acquiring other healthcare credentials.
• Two years’ experience (preferred)

WORK CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

• Assist ambulatory patients independently
• Lift up to 50 lbs. independently and for weights greater than 50 lbs. must use mechanical device or team lifting.
• Must be able to lift from ground level up above own head
• Squatting and bending at waist to reach under beds, repetitive crouching as needed
• Standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling as needed more than 2/3 of day.
• Push/Pull patients of up to 250 lbs. in a wheeled device and for weights greater than 250 lbs. must use team assistance.
• Transfer and ambulate patients with mechanical lift as necessary greater than 500 lbs.
• Vision requirements include but are not limited to close vision, distant vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. This may include ability to read thermometers, electronic scales, etc.
• Participating in On-Call schedule
• Hearing requirements include but are not limited to hearing and responding to codes, monitors, pagers, phones, equipment alarms or patients calling for assistance, ability to auscultate B/P.

EQUIPMENT USED: EEG collection and analysis equipment, computers including networked drives, telephone, fax, automated messaging software, scanner, accounting and follow-up software.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:  

• Works in a fast-paced clinical environment caring for patients of all ages, including those with chronic and complex conditions. Must be able to perform effectively in a high-stress setting while maintaining quality patient care.
