    Job Requirements

    The Emergency Department Technician performs designated tasks in the provision of care for patients under the direction and supervision of the emergency department nurse and/or physician. Performs invasive phlebotomy procedures. Transcribes and orders outpatient testing via computer system. Assists with answering telephone and directing incoming calls. Performs electrocardiograms. Performs vital signs under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

     

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Education

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Current CPR certification is required.

    Minimum Work Experience

    • One year of clinical experience in areas of EMT, Nurse Assistant, cardiology or phlebotomy preferred.
    • Must be emotionally mature and able to function under stress.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Patient Care Functions

    • Takes and records vital signs accurately within established time frame, using appropriate procedures and notifies RN, physician or physician assistant of any observations that appear abnormal.
    • Assists patient with meals/feedings.
    • Collects specimens according to policy.
    • Assists patients in admission, transfer and discharge activities.
    • Orients patient and family to physical surroundings and call system.
    • Answers call lights promptly and provide appropriate interventions.
    • Accurately documents case provided in the patient's medical record.
    • Assists RN and physician with patient exams and treatments as needed.
    • Transports patients as assigned.
    • Responds to emergency situations and performs CPR as assigned.
    • Sets up suture trays and assists physician as needed during procedure
    • Set up and assist with pelvic exams
    • Obtain visual acuity of patients 
    • Applies ortho-glass splints and pre-made splints
    • Gives soap suds enemas or fleets enemas
    • In and out cath for specimen collection only age 16 and above
    • Run I-Stat machines
    • D/c IV catheters

    Laboratory Functions

    • Performs venipuncture as appropriate to age specific patient population and according to department guidelines using proper equipment and procedures.
    • Follows procedure on blood culture prep and collection procedure for adults, infants, and children.
    • Performs heel stick or finger stick method of specimen collection according to age specific patient population and department guidelines using proper equipment and procedures constructive feedback regarding their practice.
    • Updates collected specimens in computer system and pulls up collection labels accurately and timely.
    • Obtain nasal swabs for Flu/COVID/RSV on age 2 and above
    • Obtain throat swab for Strep/ or throat culture

    EKG Functions

    • Performs technically adequate EKGs on all age groups according to department policy.
    • Maintains patient records in proper order and correctly finds all reports and information in the medical record per department policy and procedures.
    • Attend a 4-hour rhythm course to recognize good, bad and deadly rhythms 
    • Interacts effectively with other team members in a timely manner to keep them informed of changes.
    • Accurately receives and sends telephone messages and communicates them to the appropriate persons in a timely manner.
