FLSA Status: To be confirmedLocation: 174 Diamond Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122

COMPANY OVERVIEW
Xiente (formerly Norris Square Community Alliance) was founded in 1982 by a group of Puerto Rican women in North Philadelphia who saw a need and took action. From the beginning, we believed that the people most impacted by poverty should be the ones shaping the solutions. That principle still guides us today. In 2023, our evolution into Xiente marked a renewed commitment to economic mobility, systems change, and intergenerational prosperity. We are still rooted in the same neighborhood. We are still powered by the same community.
Our mission is to transform communities by empowering individuals to achieve social mobility. Xiente programs maximize personal capital - education, financial literacy, real estate, business opportunity - to create a path of economic mobility for individuals and their families.
Does this sound like what you have been looking for?
POSITION SUMMARY
This is a financial coaching role, not a referral or intake role.
Our Economic Mobility Counselors walk alongside about 60 families, many of them over the course of years. Most of our families come to us already connected to Xiente through our Early Head Start and Head Start centers or through our housing counseling program. You will sit down with a parent, look at what their money actually looks like today, and build a plan with them: income, savings, credit, debt, education, housing and career. Then you stay with them while they work it, adjusting as life changes.
You carry each family through the entire process, from the first interaction to the last. After orientation and training, you manage your own calendar and your own caseload. The team meets three times a week to talk through cases and share resources.
If you have spent your career doing intake, assessment and referral, this is a different kind of work. We are looking for someone who wants the long relationship.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Build a financial picture with each family, including income, expenses, debt, credit and savings, and set goals together.
  • Provide ongoing one-on-one financial coaching, including budgeting, credit building and repair, savings plans, and planning for education, housing and career goals.
  • Create personalized action plans with families and revisit them over time as circumstances change.
  • Stay with each family through the full relationship, tracking progress and adjusting the plan rather than handing the case off.
  • Connect families with community resources, job training programs and educational opportunities that support the plan.
  • Facilitate workshops and group sessions on financial literacy, budgeting and career development, including some evenings and occasional Saturdays.
  • Independently research and identify resources for families when an existing referral is not available, and share what you find with the team.
  • Connect families with social networks that help them advance their economic mobility goals.
  • Maintain accurate records of client interactions and progress in compliance with organizational policies.
  • Meet the enrollment goals and metrics pertaining to economic mobility initiatives and programs.
  • Collaborate with community organizations and stakeholders to enhance service delivery.
  • Complete any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, finance, human services or a related field.

B. Experience
  • Hands-on financial coaching experience. You have personally sat with clients and built a budget from scratch, reviewed a credit report and worked a repair plan, or set up a savings plan and followed up on it over months. Referring clients to a partner agency for this work is not the same thing.
  • Experience serving families connected to Head Start, Early Head Start, housing counseling or similar family-centered programs. This is where most of our families come from.
  • Experience carrying your own caseload over the long term, with the same clients, toward goals they set.
  • Experience in counseling, social services, workforce development or economic development.

C. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of financial literacy, budgeting, credit and public benefits.
  • Fluent English. Bilingual (English and Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Self-motivation, resilience, and the ability to manage your own caseload and produce results after orientation and training.
  • Willingness to hunt down a resource yourself when there is no existing referral.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build trust with families over time.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Empathy and a real commitment to the families and the community we serve.
  • Ability to analyze and use data to inform decision-making.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, internet and e-mail, and intermediate use of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Full-time and onsite at 174 Diamond Street, Philadelphia.
  • Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Workshops and activities take place some evenings, roughly two evenings in a busy month, and occasionally on a Saturday. This position is expected to attend them.
  • Counselors receive orientation and training before taking on an independent caseload.
  • The team meets three times a week to discuss cases, resources and logistics.
COMPENSATION
The salary for the Economic Mobility Counselor is $60,000 a year.

Benefits

  • 401(k) with Company Match
