Duties

  1. Identify student needs, make appropriate referrals, and develop Individual Education

Plans (IEP) that meet State and Federal Guidelines.

  1. Develop lesson plans, and instructional materials that allow for the provision of

individualized, whole group, or small group research-based instruction and also allows

students access to the general education curriculum.

  1. Implement and support students' Individual Education Plan, including long-range goals

and short-term objectives.

  1. Effectively communicate with parents by means of newsletters, e-mail, notes, phone

calls and individual parent conferences, etc.

  1. Create and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning that supports optimal

educational experiences.

  1. Plan and conduct activities that provide a balanced program of instruction, including

allowing time and opportunity for students to observe, question and investigate.

  1. Foster cooperative social behavior through activities/group projects, and assist

students in forming satisfying relationships with staff and peers

  1. Screen and provide instructional supports for English Language Learners.

  2. Evaluate student academic and social/emotional growth by monitoring individual

education plans, behavior plans, progress reports, and determine the least restrictive

environment that can meet the student's needs.

  1. Conduct ongoing assessments of the academic, behavioral, emotional and physical

performance of each student.

  1. Confer with parents/guardians, teachers, support staff, specialist, and administrators

to resolve student behavioral and academic problems.

  1. Maintain accurate and complete student records, and prepare all reports and

paperwork as required by federal and state laws, district policies, and administrative

regulations.

  1. Provide adequate information/data for all IEP meetings and conferences when

considering placement or reassignment of students.

  1. Establish and maintain ongoing communication with standard and special services staff

for all assigned students.

  1. Discuss student problems, behavior incidents, positive developments, and progress

with parents in an honest, sensitive and confidential manner.

  1. Assist students with personal needs, including toileting and diapering, as needed.

  2. Promote parent participation and involvement in educational activities and IEP

meetings and decisions.

  1. Requisition instructional materials and supplies necessary to facilitate the long-range

goals for Least

  1. Attend meetings called by the Principal and Director/Assist. Director of Special Services

  2. Work cooperatively with the parents and the community.

  3. Provide input regarding the curriculum to the Principal and Special Education

Director/Asst. Director.

  1. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by

the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.

  1. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals; and, work

cooperatively, with the appropriate administrator, to evaluate their job performance.

  1. Establish, implement, and enforce rules and procedures related to appropriate

classroom behavior: allow for and maintain a positive learning environment.

  1. Maintain CPI certification.

  2. Perform other tasks that may be assigned by the principal or Director/Asst. Director of

Special Services

Qualifications

  1. Appropriately licensed/certified by the Illinois State Board of Education.

  2. Competence with curriculum, diagnostic instruments, and research-based/evidence

based interventions.

  1. Ability to work successfully with diverse populations.

  2. Competence in the use of technology.

  3. Excellent communication skills including verbal, listening and written.

  4. Positive attitude and excellent work ethic and organizational skills.

  5. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others.

  6. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

  7. High level of professionalism and ethics.

  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and

acceptable.
