JOB DESCRIPTION
The Speech and Language Pathologist is an integral member of the Office of Specialized Student Services and
reports to the Director of Specialized Student Services in collaboration with building administration. The Speech
and Language Pathologist provides direct and consultative services to students with communication needs and
serves as an essential member of multidisciplinary teams responsible for initial and three-year reevaluations
addressing communication and language development.
This position will have a primary focus on supporting the District's Early On program and Lessenger Early
Childhood Center, providing services to infants, toddlers, preschool-aged children, and their families. The
Speech and Language Pathologist will collaborate with families, early childhood educators, special education
staff, and related service providers to support communication development through developmentally appropriate,
family-centered, and inclusive practices.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education/Certification
- Valid full Michigan License in Speech-Language Pathology (no limited license), or
- Valid Michigan teacher certificate in the area of Speech/Language Pathology and current ASHA
Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC)
Preferred Experience
- Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written
- A strong commitment to educating students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment, as
demonstrated by experience with co-teaching or other collaborative delivery models within an
educational setting
- A wealth of instructional strategies to address the speech/language needs of students with various
disabilities
- Proficiency in integrating technology into instruction as a tool for student learning and/or
communication

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
- Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of programs to improve
communication skills
- Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring students suspected of having
communication impairments
- Deep understanding of MTSS 3-Tier Model and Response to Intervention in relation to language,
literacy, and the role of the SLP
- • Provide a thorough assessment of communication impairments
- Provide screening to identify students in need of referring
- Assist in proper referral of individuals to agencies and specialist in the community
- Provide appropriate individualized program of therapy to meet individualized student IEP goals and
objectives
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to integrate therapy goals into the
students' daily activities
- Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families, when appropriate.
- If case coordinator, schedule and chair these IEPs
- Function as team members for initial referrals, re-determinations of eligibility, IEPs, including
maintaining contact with school, family, physicians and agencies
- Complete record keeping including keeping data on student progress for progress reporting
- Complete monthly Medicaid billing (if you have your CCCs) and Random Moment Time Studies
(RMTS)
- Participate on advisory committees as appropriate
- Provide and/or participate in professional development
- Participate in professional development opportunities that are aligned with the district and school's
mission, vision and goals and compliance
- Be an active member of the school community through, Professional Learning Communities, various
building and district committee work, the School Improvement Team and other leadership opportunities
as presented
- All other duties as assigned by the director or principal
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Provide speech and language evaluation, intervention, consultation, and related services to infants,
toddlers, preschool-aged children, and other students as assigned.
- Support the District's Early On program by participating in multidisciplinary evaluations, IFSP
development, progress monitoring, service delivery, and transition planning for eligible children and
families.

- Provide family-centered services that support caregivers in promoting communication and language
development within everyday activities and routines.
- Deliver services in developmentally appropriate settings, including early childhood classrooms,
natural learning environments, and other settings as determined by the child's IFSP or IEP.
- Collaborate closely with Early On providers, early childhood teachers, special education staff,
occupational and physical therapists, social workers, psychologists, administrators, and other
members of multidisciplinary teams.
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations addressing receptive and expressive language, articulation/
phonology, fluency, voice, social communication, and other communication-related needs, as
appropriate.
- Develop measurable communication goals and identify developmentally appropriate strategies,
accommodations, supports, and assistive communication needs.
- Provide consultation and coaching to teachers, paraprofessionals, caregivers, and other team
members to promote communication development throughout the child's daily environment.
- Participate in the transition of children from Early On services into preschool special education and
other appropriate programs and services.
- Support inclusive early childhood practices by embedding speech and language strategies within
classroom instruction, play, routines, and peer interactions.
- Maintain required documentation, progress data, evaluation reports, IFSP/IEP documentation,
Medicaid documentation, and other records in accordance with District, state, and federal
requirements.
