Job Description Francis Howell School District Classroom Assistant (Preschool) Purpose Statement The job of Classroom Assistant (Preschool) is done for the purpose/s of planning and providing childcare for preschool children; developing and adapting activities for children with disabilities to be included in the Preschool program; providing an environment and atmosphere that includes safety, welfare and the successful inclusion of a child with disabilities in the program. Essential Functions Assists children during transitional times for the purpose of monitoring lunch habits and skills and making the process less challenging and stressful. Assists students during emergencies (e.g. drills, fires, tornados, CPR, etc.) for the purpose of guiding students to the designated evacuation location. Assists students individually or in small groups (e.g. performing activities, supplemental work, etc.) for the purpose of monitoring and reinforcing the teacher's lesson plans to enhance students learning skills. Attends professional development and other opportunities within the school district for the purpose of gaining knowledge and skills for children with disabilities. Completes all records and reports required by the preschool (e.g. Accident/Incident Reports, DDRB, parent and children surveys, etc.) for the purpose of working closely with the teacher and following compliance regulations. Helps students with various personal tasks (e.g. taking care of their personal belongings, buttoning, snapping, bathroom skills, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the personal needs are met. Implements and adapts activities for children with disabilities for the purpose of assisting with participation in a program for inclusion with peers. Models appropriate behavior and reinforcing positive behavior for the purpose of helping children understand and follow rules and policies for safety during indoor and outdoor activities. Performs activities as prescribed in the behavior intervention systems for the purpose of helping students to modify or eliminate negative behaviors. Plans and facilitates developed services and activities for the purpose of providing an environment and program activities that are safe, fun and educational for the children. Responds request to assist students in crisis behavior (e.g. (e.g. circumstances may be ambiguous (uncertain) or imminently (clearly) dangerous, etc.), etc.) for the purpose of supporting situation and following specific directions to secure the well-being of the student (s) within regulatory standards and guidelines. Other Functions Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: child guidance principles and practices, especially as they Classroom Assistant (Preschool) Page 1 of 3 relate to students with learning disabilities; basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading; instructional materials and techniques used in Special Education; safe practices in classroom and other activities; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; reading and writing communication skills; record keeping techniques; and modern office practices and procedures. SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: handling hazardous materials; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: learning the methods, procedures, functions and limitation of assigned duties; supervising and disciplining students according to approved policies and procedures; modeling appropriate social skills, social interaction and appearance; applying behavior modification techniques developed for classroom use; writing observations and document student behavior; intervening positively in, and diffusing potential confrontations among students; printing and writing legibly; making arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately; understanding and following oral and written directions; communicating effectively orally and in writing with children and adults; reading, interpreting and following rules, regulations, policies and procedures; establishing and maintaining effective and empathetic working relationships with others; maintaining confidentiality; and understanding the exceptional needs of special education students. Responsibility Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Work Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, 40% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Experience: Job related experience is required in managing student behavior. Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
