Dump Truck Driver/Operator

DEPARTMENT: Field Operations

JOB SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

The Distributor Operator heats, tacks, and operates the tack truck, safely and productively handling equipment to calibrate and operate the distributor in support of Dunn's paving operations. This role takes rack readings and completes tack reports, maintains the truck and distributor, protects areas that are not supposed to be primed, and assists the road crew when not distributing tack material.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Tack Truck Operation - Heat, tack, and operate the tack truck, safely and productively handling equipment in support of paving operations.

2. Distributor Calibration & Application - Calibrate and operate the distributor to ensure accurate and consistent tack material application.

3. Tack Report & Rack Readings - Take beginning and ending rack readings and complete the tack report for each shift.

4. Operating Data & Recordkeeping - Record operating data such as products, quantities, gauge readings, and operating times, manually or using computers.

5. Vehicle Maintenance - Maintain proper upkeep of the truck and distributor, including checking tire pressure, fluid levels, and other routine maintenance items.

6. Area Protection - Protect areas that are not supposed to be primed from tack material application.

7. Radio & Verbal Communication - Communicate with dispatch, crew members, and other drivers using two-way radios hands free approved device and verbal communication.

8. Route Navigation - Read maps and navigate routes throughout central Alabama.

9. Road Crew Support - Assist the road crew with paving operations when not distributing tack material.

10. Schedule Flexibility - Work nights and weekends as needed to support production and paving schedules.

11. General Support - Perform other duties as assigned that are necessary to support crew and production operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. CDL Class B required; CDL Class A with HAZMAT and Tanker endorsements preferred.

2. Over 2 years of verifiable experience preferred.

3. Clean motor vehicle record (MVR).

4. Ability to read maps and navigate routes throughout central Alabama.

5. Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.

1. Operation Monitoring - Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is

working properly.

2. Operation and Control - Controlling operations of equipment or systems.

3. Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related

documents.

4. Troubleshooting - Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.

5. Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to

choose the most appropriate one.

6. Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand

the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

1. Multilimb Coordination - The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two

legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or climbing.

2. Control Precision - The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle

to exact positions.

3. Rate Control - The ability to time your movements or the movement of a piece of equipment in

anticipation of changes in the speed and/or direction of a moving object or scene.

4. Static Strength - The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.

5. Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not

involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.

6. Perceptual Speed - The ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences among

sets of letters, numbers, objects, pictures, or patterns.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no supervisory responsibility.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly operates a vehicle and equipment in and

around active job sites and public roadways, and is exposed to hot tack material, varying weather conditions,

moving equipment and traffic, dust, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to

successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable

individuals with disabilities to perform these functions. The employee walks or stands for up to 10 hours per

shift, and frequently climbs in and out of the truck multiple times per shift. The employee carries objects for

up to 1 hour and bends or stoops for up to 30 minutes per shift, with crouching required only rarely. The

employee frequently lifts objects weighing 5-10 pounds, 10-20 pounds, and 20-50 pounds for up to 15

minutes each per shift, with objects over 50 pounds lifted very rarely. Specific vision abilities required include

close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Days and hours of work vary based on the production and paving

schedule, and the employee must be able to work nights and weekends as needed.

TRAVEL

This position involves regular driving throughout central Alabama to complete assigned job site and paving

routes; no additional travel beyond assigned routes is required.
