Direct Support Professionals Needed in Yonkers
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides compassionate, person-centered support to individuals with disabilities or other support needs. The DSP assists individuals with daily living activities, personal goals, community participation, and maintaining the highest possible level of independence, dignity, and quality of life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct, respectful, and individualized support based on each person’s needs, preferences, and service plan.
- Assist with activities of daily living, including personal care, hygiene, dressing, meal preparation, and medication reminders or assistance as permitted.
- Support individuals in developing and maintaining independence and life skills.
- Encourage participation in recreational, social, educational, vocational, and community activities.
- Provide transportation or transportation assistance as required.
- Promote a safe, clean, and supportive living environment.
- Monitor individuals’ health, safety, behavior, and overall well-being and report concerns promptly.
- Follow individualized service plans, organizational policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services, activities, incidents, and significant observations.
- Communicate effectively with individuals, families, caregivers, supervisors, and other members of the support team.
- Provide appropriate behavioral support and follow established intervention strategies when applicable.
- Protect the individual’s privacy, confidentiality, rights, and personal dignity at all times.
- Assist with household tasks and meal planning/preparation when appropriate.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established emergency procedures.
- Attend required training, staff meetings, and professional development activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred/required depending on organizational requirements.
- Previous experience supporting individuals with disabilities is preferred.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to remain patient, professional, dependable, and compassionate in challenging situations.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record may be required.
- Ability to successfully complete required background checks, training, and certifications.
Physical Requirements
The position may require standing, walking, bending, lifting, assisting with transfers, and other physical activities necessary to safely support individuals with daily living needs. Specific requirements vary according to the individual’s support needs and work environment.
