MAJOR FUNCTION
This is skilled and technical work involving firefighting, emergency medical response, and vehicle operation. The Driver Engineer is responsible for safely operating and maintaining fire apparatus and equipment, as well as delivering emergency care and protecting life and property during fire, rescue, and hazardous situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a valid Certificate of Compliance as outlined in the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal Uniform Fire Safety Rules and Standards Chapter 4A-37, or a verification letter indicating that the individual meets the above requirements, and will be issued a Certificate of Compliance from the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Fire Standards and Training Office and:
A. Is at least 18 years of age
B. Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a full-time paid Firefighter in an organized, public sector, career Fire Department within the State of Florida.
C. Meets the requirements in Florida Statute 401.281 as this position may be required to drive an advanced life support vehicle in the event of an emergency.
D. Possess and maintain a valid license as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic issued by the State of Florida Department of Health at time of appointment and be in good standing with the Office of Medical Direction (OMD). Promotions will be based on the needs of the department.
E. Meet the following driving history requirements:
F. Must provide proof of insurance when required to use their personal vehicle as part of their daily job duties.
G. Possess a valid American Heart Association CPR "BLS for Health Care Providers" card or the American Red Cross Professional CPR card.
H. Possess a valid American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support card and Pediatric Advanced Life Support card or HandTevy certificate.
I. Possess a valid Emergency Vehicle Operator Course Certification card or a recognized 16-hour course that is equivalent.
J. Possess a valid State of Florida Pump Operator Certification.
K. Aerial Operations Certificate (45hr) FSFC #BFST703/ATPC703
L. Must have a valid driver''s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment.
M. Possess the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications:
SPECIAL PREFERENCES
Maintain a valid certification as a Paramedic issued by the State of Florida Department of Health.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must meet all criteria of the current "Selection Standards for Firefighter Positions" as promulgated by the Polk County Human Resources Division.
Must obtain and maintain Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Awareness certification through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Employees hired into this position after January 1, 2013, must obtain and maintain this certification as a condition of employment.
Applicants/employees shall be fingerprinted and subject to personal background investigation procedures to ascertain an evaluation and determination of moral character according to Chapter 4A-37 Firefighters Standards and Training.
Must have a telephone while employed with the Fire Rescue Division as employee is subject to call in emergencies.
Applicants who have not been employed by the Polk County Fire Rescue Division in a firefighting capacity will be required to certify by affidavit that he/she has been a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application as required by Florida State Statute 633.412.
