    Project/Unit Description

    The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) is currently seeking a Division Chief Scientist for the Integrated Space Systems (ISS) Division located in Atlanta, GA. The ISS Division is a multi-disciplinary team of engineers dedicated to advancing space-centric solutions through applied research, rapid prototyping, and smart sustainment. Leveraging diverse expertise across engineering, fabrication and assembly, and operations, the team focuses on developing innovative, mission-driven technologies and transitioning them swiftly from concept to real-world deployment. We excel in integrating complex subsystems and delivering operational capabilities that address evolving challenges in the space domain.

    Job Purpose

    The Division Chief Scientist helps direct and oversees the division’s internal research and development (IRAD) program. The division chief scientist ensures IRAD activities will maintain and grow the division’s competitive position by: formulating and executing key elements of the division’s strategy, working closely with researchers and unit leads in the alignment of IRAD with other investments and awards, developing collaborations across other labs (Division Chief Scientists in particular), representing the division’s opportunities and challenges through reporting to the Lab Chief Scientist, and connecting with the broader research and sponsor community.

    Additional Responsibilities

    • Oversee division IRAD portfolio, including financial oversight, technical oversight, and liaison with ELSYS Chief Scientist
    • Partner with division leadership to create division strategic plans, sponsor-engagement opportunities, technology/research roadmaps, and proposals
    • Support preparation for division inputs to ELSYS strategy planning/discussions
    • Maintain awareness of key technological advancements and shifts, especially as they relate to the development of new research thrusts for the division
    • Lead key white paper and proposal efforts; serve as point of contact throughout GTRI for collaboration with division
    • Encourage publication, outreach, and impactful conference participation within the division
    • Form strategic relationships with key subject matter experts across GTRI, Georgia Tech, industry, and our sponsors

    Required Minimum Qualifications

    • Extensive experience in projects and/or program management
    • Extensive experience in program development, including sponsor relations, writing white papers and leading proposal efforts
    • Demonstrated proficiency in technical areas relevant to the Division to include: electronic systems development/fielding, software/firmware development, systems engineering, RF engineering, and electronic systems testing and evaluation

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Active Top Secret Clearance
    • Experience leading internal research and development programs
    • Experience translating targeted internal investments into sponsored research

    Travel Requirements

    10% - 25% travel

    Education and Length of Experience

    This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

    • 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related/comparable technical degree
    • 3 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related/comparable technical degree
    • 0 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related/comparable technical degree

    Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

    Clearance Type Required
