Mission or Goal of Unit: The Division of Neonatal Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and the Children's Hospital of Richmond of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System seeks an outstanding academic neonatologist to serve as the William Tate Graham Endowed Chair and Division Chief of the Division of Neonatal Medicine as an Associate Professor or Professor in the University Tenure or University Clinical position. The Division shares a core mission with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine to preserve and restore health through education, clinical care and research.

The Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine provides state-of-the-art care for premature and sick newborn infants, conducts investigations to advance clinical diagnosis and treatment, and trains physicians and researchers to become leaders in those pursuits. Current areas of research includes medical education, quality improvement science, medical ethics, epidemiology, and translational, clinical and basic research. The Division oversees the only referral tertiary level IV Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit located within the Critical Care Wing of the VCU Health Medical Center, directly connected to the High-Risk Labor and Delivery Service. The Division oversees the only Neonatal ECMO Program as well as the only Regional Comprehensive Neonatal Continuing Care Follow-up Program within the region. The tradition of integrating clinical services with basic, translational, epidemiologic, and applied research continues uninterrupted to the present day through a number of research initiatives including National Institutes of Health, Federal and State foundation participation and the pioneering Child Health Research Institute.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Pediatrics at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine is seeking a full-time outstanding academic Neonatologist to serve as the Chief of the Division of Neonatal Medicine with interests and/or experience in neonatal medicine education, research, quality improvement or mentorship. Expected responsibilities include leadership of a large academic division of 14 Neonatologists, an accredited Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Training Program, clinical care within a level IV regional NICU, a regional neonatal follow-up program, an ELSO gold certified ECMO program, multidisciplinary hypothermia treatment program, active research in pulmonary, nutrition and cardiac health with expected leadership in educational of residents, medical students and or learners as well as a Summer Scholars Program. In addition, there are strong opportunities to continue or establish efforts and initiatives in fellowship education, including leadership, in program development or in clinical or bench research, depending on background and interest. Neonatologists within the Division provide a mix of direct clinical care, clinical or QA/QI activities, educational oversight including didactic and bedside teaching for students, residents and fellows, as well as academic efforts that include a broad area of research or other activities that meet the needs of the division and the individual.

Responsibilities:

  • Education: Faculty member will have experience in mentoring and guiding fellows and faculty and have teaching responsibilities within the clinical services of the division. Faculty member will provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, Residents, Chief Residents, and Fellows when applicable including oversight of the Program Director of fellowship training in development of curriculum for maintenance of the accreditation of the Fellowship Training Program.
  • Research: Faculty member will have experience in successful research and will participate in scholarly research activities that can include basic science, clinical, translational, or other research endeavors.
  • Service: Faculty member will serve as a role model in divisional, departmental, or School of Medicine level committees when appropriate, and engage in professional activities through journal review, conference presentations, committee work at the national level etc.
  • Clinical: Faculty member will serve as an expert clinical Neonatologist for the Division in the Department of Pediatrics including attendance and oversight of Delivery Room services, Transport etc. Clinical schedule will include weekends, holidays, and nights.
  • Administrative: Faculty member will take on administrative duties associated with this role.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • NRP certification
  • Board certified in Pediatrics and board certified in Neonatal Medicine
  • Expertise in Neonatal Perinatal clinical care
  • Leadership experience in a regional Perinatal Center, level IV NICU and Division within an academic medical center
  • Experience with successful scholarly research activities
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Salary Range: Commensurate
