Electrical Design Engineer

This position is with an industry leader in the power and energy industry specializing in transmission, distribution, and substation projects across the US. Job Description

Independently develop distribution line designs using utility GIS platforms, pole loading software, and related engineering tools; produce construction drawings, staking sheets, bills of material, and technical documentation.

Perform detailed engineering analysis and calculations to ensure compliance with NESC, RUS, and client-specific distribution standards.

Evaluate routing, pole placement, equipment selection, and constructability considerations, including ROW requirements, clearances, and loading conditions.

Coordinate with survey, field personnel, and real estate teams to incorporate field measurements, as-built data, and easement information into design.

Identify and support permitting requirements (DOT, railroad, local jurisdictions) and assist with preparing exhibits, applications, and supporting materials.

Conduct pole loading analysis, guying design, underground conduit/duct bank design, and basic structural checks for distribution facilities.

Review and finalize material assemblies, transformer/switchgear placements, and construction configurations for complete IFC design packages.

Support client meetings, cross-discipline coordination, and field visits for design validation, site assessment, and construction support.

Contribute to continuous improvement efforts, standards development, design templates, and technical initiatives within the distribution engineering team.

Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and drafters.

The Successful Applicant

Education/Experience

Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related ABET-accredited engineering discipline required.

Typically, 2 or more years of relevant experience in distribution line design or utility engineering. Equivalent combinations of training, practical experience, and performance will also be considered.

FE/EIT preferred or in progress.

Desired Skills & Attributes

Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel), AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and utility design tools (GIS, pole loading software such as PLS-CADD/POLE, etc.).

Solid understanding of distribution line design principles, NESC/RUS compliance, construction standards, pole loading, and material assemblies.

Strong problem-solving, coordination, communication, and documentation skills.

Ability to mentor junior technical staff and contribute to standards, workflow improvements, and team development.
