    Distribution Engineer

    Contract-to-Hire | Albuquerque, NM

    Position Overview

    We are seeking a Distribution Engineer to join a project team supporting the design and development of electric utility distribution systems. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity based in Albuquerque, NM.

    The Distribution Engineer will work on a variety of 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground utility distribution projects, developing high-quality designs for new construction, system alterations, replacements, and redevelopment projects. This role will collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, field personnel, clients, and other project stakeholders throughout the design and construction process.

    The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of electrical distribution systems, applicable NESC and utility standards, and experience developing engineering deliverables for overhead and underground distribution projects.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop and prepare distribution voltage packages for overhead and underground utility projects, including:
      • Distribution equipment installation
      • Feeder replacement
      • Cable replacement
      • New feeder design
    • Develop detailed design sketches, cost estimates, bills of materials, and other required engineering deliverables.
    • Perform distribution engineering calculations, including:
      • Cable pulling calculations
      • Voltage drop calculations
      • Pole loading calculations
      • Electrical distribution power-flow analysis
    • Apply knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements and applicable utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
    • Work with project teams throughout the design and construction process, adapting distribution plans to accommodate budget constraints, design considerations, constructability, and client requirements.
    • Research, collect, and compile project-related information and data as requested by project managers.
    • Perform field inspections of overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.
    • Prepare and coordinate project communications related to vegetation management, third-party attachments, right-of-way requirements, easements, permitting, and outage planning.
    • Develop client presentations, technical reports, drawings, and visualizations to communicate project status and technical results.
    • Utilize distribution design software and GIS tools to support engineering and design activities.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure accurate, efficient, and constructible designs.
    • Maintain organized project documentation and ensure deliverables meet applicable quality standards.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and applicable engineering standards.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program and a minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience; consulting experience preferred.

    OR

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related Engineering Technology degree from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and a minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience; consulting experience preferred.

    OR

    • Master's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2 years of relevant engineering experience; consulting experience preferred.

    Important Education Requirement

    • The engineering degree must be from an ABET-accredited program. This is a non-negotiable requirement.
    • Internship experience does not count toward the required years of professional engineering experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
    • Previous consulting engineering experience.
    • Experience with electric utility distribution systems and distribution design.
    • Experience working with overhead and underground distribution facilities.
    • Experience with distribution design software and GIS applications.

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems and power-flow principles.
    • Working knowledge of NESC standards and utility-specific standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
    • Knowledge of easements, right-of-way requirements, permitting, and other regulatory considerations associated with utility distribution projects.
    • Proficiency with distribution design software and GIS tools.
    • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong quantitative, analytical, and critical-thinking abilities.
    • Ability to work methodically and independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative project team.
    • Strong attention to detail, organization, facilitation, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
