    Description

    Staff Distribution Designer

    Contract-to-Hire Opportunity | Kansas City, MO

    Our client is seeking an experienced Staff Distribution Designer to join their project team in Kansas City, MO. This position will support the design of new, upgraded, and redeveloped electric distribution systems ranging from 2.4kV to 34.5kV, including both overhead and underground projects.

    The ideal candidate will have strong utility distribution design experience and be comfortable working throughout the design and construction process while balancing client needs, design requirements, and project budgets.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and prepare distribution design packages for overhead and underground utility projects.
    • Design distribution equipment installations, feeder replacements, cable replacements, and new feeder systems.
    • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bills of material, and other project deliverables.
    • Perform distribution calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading.
    • Apply NESC standards and applicable utility standards, specifications, guides, and procedures.
    • Research and compile project data to support project managers and design teams.
    • Coordinate project requirements related to vegetation management, third-party attachments, right-of-way, easements, permitting, and outage planning.
    • Prepare client presentations, reports, and visualizations to communicate technical results and project status.
    • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, construction teams, clients, and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Drafting Technology or a related field with 7+ years of related experience, OR
    • Associate degree with 8+ years of related experience, OR
    • 9+ years of progressive detailing and design experience.
    • 7+ years of experience in utility or power distribution, preferably with electric distribution projects.
    • Advanced proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel.
    • Experience with distribution design software and GIS applications such as DDS, ArcFM, AUD, BOUD, or similar platforms.
    • Strong understanding of electric distribution infrastructure and construction methods.
    • Knowledge of NESC standards and utility design practices.
    • Understanding of easements, right-of-way requirements, and permitting for distribution projects.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a project team.
    • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple project requirements.
