Description

Director

Washington, DC | Full-time | Hybrid In-Person

Beam Strategy Group, a boutique strategy and advisory firm, is building a small, high-caliber team and seeks an Associate to help drive client work across a broad and evolving portfolio.

Our work spans corporate communications, public affairs, management and strategy consulting, political and campaign strategy, and executive advisory.

This is a role for a self-starter with sharp, discerning judgment who is ready to support the work we do for clients and grow. On this team everyone does the work directly – Associates and Senior Directors alike. This is a firm where collaboration and teamwork are key in order to be most effective in addressing client work.

The work sits at the intersection of business, reputation, policy, culture, and influence, because that is where the most consequential decisions are tested. We help leaders find clarity in complexity, see around corners, and turn bold ideas into action, and we believe the best advisors are close enough to understand and independent enough to challenge.

This is a hybrid in-person role based in the Washington, DC area. Client assignments are directed by firm leadership, so comfort moving across industries, issues, and client types is essential. The position requires periodic travel to support client engagements and events.

Capabilities

The Director leads and executes public affairs and communications work across the firm's portfolio, shaping the right mix of tactics for each client and owning workstreams from strategy through delivery. We are looking for someone with fluency in one or two of the below areas, with working familiarity across the rest:

  • Public affairs strategy: diagnosing the policy, political, and reputational landscape around a client's goals and designing integrated campaigns to move it.
  • Government relations and advocacy: advancing client priorities with Congress, the Administration, regulators, and state and local officials.
  • Coalitions and third-party validators: identifying, building, and managing coalitions and allied voices that lend credibility and reach to a client's position.
  • Grassroots and grasstops mobilization: recruiting and activating advocates, local leaders, and influential constituents in the states and districts that matter most.
  • Policy and political intelligence: tracking legislative, regulatory, and political developments and translating them into clear implications and options for clients.
  • Communications savvy: bringing a working knowledge of key communications tactics and tools, and eager to grow their skills in this area.
  • Executive counsel: advising senior leaders on how to navigate high-stakes policy and political decisions.

The best candidates see the full policy and political landscape, anticipate how decision-makers and stakeholders will respond, and lead the team in executing quickly and with precision to deliver results.

Responsibilities

Public Affairs Strategy & Execution

  • Support public affairs strategy for clients navigating policy, regulatory, and reputational challenges.
  • Provide counsel and rapid response support during high-profile or politically sensitive media moments.
  • Draft op-eds, LTEs, and thought leadership pieces to advance client goals.
  • Manage field operatives specializing in government affairs, grassroots mobilization, and media relations for client projects, tracking client deliverables and driving field operatives to meet client needs, including guiding state strategy, advocate recruitment and engagement, etc.

Client Relationship & Counsel

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, working alongside senior team members.
  • Translate policy, corporate, and advocacy priorities into compelling media strategies.

  • Experience contributing to account teams and campaign execution, with familiarity in advocacy, public affairs, or policy campaigns.
  • Proven project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple client accounts and competing deadlines simultaneously.
  • Prior experience working at a public affairs/communications firm or agency setting a plus.

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft sharp, persuasive messaging

Required Competencies

  • Happy to roll up their sleeves for any client and any task, with no job too small.
  • Coachable and eager to grow, taking direction and feedback from senior leadership well.
