    Description

    Overview

PowerPlan is seeking a Director, Software Engineering to lead engineering delivery at one of the most consequential junctures in our history — the modernization of a decades-trusted enterprise platform into a cloud-native SaaS product for the energy industry. You'll translate architectural strategy into day-to-day execution reality, leading Engineering Managers and their teams to deliver reliably, improve continuously, and build systems that regulated utility customers depend on.

You'll collaborate closely with the Senior Director of Engineering, Product, Architecture, CloudOps, and InfoSec to ensure execution keeps pace with a growing SaaS business. This is a role for a leader who stays close to the work rather than managing from a distance — someone who owns decisions at their level, escalates with recommendations rather than questions, and improves the system rather than just fighting the next fire.

Join us, and you'll have the opportunity to influence the technology, engineering practices, and capabilities that will shape it for years to come.

    Responsibilities

    Your Impact

    • Own delivery commitments end-to-end, establishing a cadence where sprint and quarterly commitments are met with no surprises to Product or leadership.
    • Build a layer of Engineering Managers who operate with genuine ownership — clear expectations, consistent accountability, and strong coaching habits.
    • Drive consistent adoption of the NXT reference architecture and embed security-by-design practices across your teams.
    • Own the operational health of your teams' systems, maintaining 99%+ uptime targets and reducing engineering-driven support ticket volume.
    • Be a trusted cross-functional partner to Product, Architecture, CloudOps, InfoSec, and Professional Services.
    • Own delivery predictability, cycle time, quality metrics, and cloud cost efficiency, using data to drive action rather than just report it.

    What Success Looks Like

Within six months, your teams ship what they commit to, and Product and senior leadership stop being surprised. Within nine months, your Engineering Managers operate with genuine ownership rather than escalating decisions upward. By month twelve, the NXT reference architecture is a standard your teams follow rather than interpret, and you're the partner Product, Architecture, and CloudOps trust to bring data and recommendations before being asked.

    Qualifications

    What You'll Bring

    • 10+ years in software engineering, with 3+ years leading Engineering Managers or senior ICs in a multi-team environment.
    • A proven track record translating product and architectural strategy into reliable sprint delivery — you close loops, not just open them.
    • Hands-on delivery experience in enterprise SaaS or cloud platform modernization, ideally from legacy architecture to cloud-native.
    • Technical depth deep enough to challenge architectural decisions constructively — familiar with Azure, distributed systems, API-first design, and SDLC discipline.
    • A coaching-first approach to management, building EM ownership rather than absorbing decisions upward, and addressing performance directly.
    • The ability to translate technical trade-offs into plain business language, bringing data before being asked.
    • Experience in regulated industries or enterprise SaaS where reliability, compliance readiness, and customer trust are non-negotiable.

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
