This leader will oversee teams of enterprise and solution architects, software developers, and technical specialists responsible for designing, building, integrating, and evolving scalable, secure, and sustainable technology solutions.
The role bridges strategy and execution, translating business priorities into actionable platform roadmaps, architectural decisions, and high-quality technical outcomes. The Director will establish clear engineering and architecture standards while ensuring teams deliver measurable business value with appropriate speed, quality, security, and operational stability.
This leader will partner closely with Product, Business Delivery, Infrastructure, Security, Data, Enterprise Applications, and business stakeholders to ensure platform investments support enterprise strategy, improve operational efficiency, and reduce technical debt.
Platform and Architecture Strategy
- Define and execute the enterprise platform architecture strategy in alignment with business objectives and the broader technology roadmap.
- Develop and maintain current-state and future-state architectures across applications, integrations, data, infrastructure, and enterprise platforms.
- Translate business capabilities and strategic priorities into scalable platform solutions and sequenced technical roadmaps.
- Establish architectural principles, reference architectures, reusable patterns, and technology standards.
- Evaluate existing and emerging technologies to determine their applicability, value, risk, and alignment with the enterprise ecosystem.
- Guide modernization efforts involving legacy platforms, cloud technologies, APIs, automation, artificial intelligence, and platform consolidation.
- Ensure architectural decisions account for scalability, maintainability, security, resiliency, performance, and total cost of ownership.
- Establish governance that promotes consistency and transparency without creating unnecessary barriers to delivery.
Engineering and Delivery Execution
- Lead software development teams responsible for the design, development, integration, testing, deployment, and ongoing enhancement of enterprise platforms.
- Convert approved platform strategies and roadmaps into clear, achievable execution plans.
- Establish engineering practices that improve development quality, release predictability, platform stability, and speed to value.
- Ensure development work is appropriately designed, estimated, documented, tested, secured, and supported.
- Partner with Product and Business Delivery leaders to balance business demand, architectural priorities, technical debt, and available capacity.
- Oversee technical delivery across multiple concurrent initiatives, identifying dependencies, constraints, and execution risks.
- Create clear accountability for solution quality and technical outcomes from initial design through production implementation.
- Ensure production defects, recurring incidents, and platform performance concerns are translated into sustainable engineering improvements.
Architecture and Technical Governance
- Lead architectural reviews for strategic initiatives, major system changes, integrations, and technology investments.
- Establish clear decision rights and escalation paths for architectural and engineering decisions.
- Ensure solutions comply with enterprise security, data, privacy, regulatory, accessibility, and technology standards.
- Maintain architectural documentation, system inventories, dependency maps, technical standards, and decision records.
- Identify and prioritize technical debt based on operational risk, business impact, cost, and strategic value.
- Partner with Cybersecurity, Risk, Compliance, and Infrastructure teams to embed appropriate controls throughout the solution lifecycle.
- Provide technical guidance during vendor evaluation, solution selection, contracting, and implementation planning.
- Monitor adherence to architecture and engineering standards while allowing for documented, risk-based exceptions.
People Leadership and Organizational Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary organization of architects, developers, and technical specialists.
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, career paths, and performance expectations across architecture and engineering teams.
- Build a culture of accountability, curiosity, collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Create strong partnerships between architects and developers so that architecture remains connected to practical execution.
- Develop succession plans and strengthen internal technical leadership capabilities.
- Assess organizational capacity and capability gaps and recommend appropriate hiring, training, partner, or sourcing strategies.
- Promote knowledge sharing, reusable solutions, and communities of practice across the technology organization.
- Hold leaders and team members accountable for both technical quality and business outcomes.
Business and Executive Partnership
- Serve as a trusted technology advisor to senior business and technology leaders.
- Communicate architectural decisions, delivery risks, investment needs, and technical tradeoffs in clear business language.
- Partner with business leaders to understand strategic objectives, operational challenges, and evolving capability needs.
- Provide transparent reporting on delivery health, platform performance, capacity, dependencies, risks, and investment value.
- Support annual planning, roadmap development, budgeting, capacity planning, and portfolio prioritization.
- Ensure technology recommendations are supported by business value, measurable outcomes, and an understanding of organizational readiness.
- Build productive relationships with strategic vendors and implementation partners while maintaining clear internal ownership and accountability.
