Underwriting Director
Location: Overland Park, KS — onsite, hybrid, or remote within regional proximity for leadership alignment and platform integration
The Numbers: 150K – 250K+ Total Comp (strong base + variable comp tied to portfolio performance; structure flexes based on leadership scope, team responsibility, and book size)
The Big Picture
This is a leadership opportunity within a specialty P&C insurance platform that is scaling both its underwriting capability and distribution footprint across multiple verticals. With operations centralized in Overland Park, the organization is building a structure where underwriting leadership has direct visibility into both portfolio performance and the relationships driving business into the platform.
The model is intentionally more aligned than traditional carrier environments—bringing underwriting, distribution, and execution closer together to improve speed, decision quality, and long-term results.
The Mission
Own and guide a broader underwriting portfolio within a specialty P&C insurance environment.
This role sits above individual deals and programs, focused on driving performance across a segment of the business—balancing growth, risk discipline, and operational alignment. You are responsible for setting the tone on underwriting decisions, ensuring consistency, and maintaining profitability across your area of responsibility.
The Daily Grind (The Good Kind)
- Portfolio Leadership: Oversee a defined segment of the specialty P&C insurance book with full responsibility for performance, profitability, and growth direction
- Underwriting Oversight: Guide deal-level decisions across the team, ensuring consistent underwriting standards and risk selection discipline
- Strategic Direction: Shape how your segment of the business grows—balancing opportunity with long-term portfolio health
- Team Influence: Act as a leader and escalation point for underwriting talent across the platform
- Distribution Alignment: Maintain close coordination with broker channels and internal teams to ensure consistent pipeline and deal quality
- Performance Management: Monitor portfolio trends, loss ratios, and production metrics, adjusting strategy where needed
Your Toolkit
- The Battle Scars: 10–20+ years in commercial or specialty P&C insurance underwriting with exposure to portfolio leadership or team oversight
- Leadership Experience: Demonstrated ability to influence underwriting teams, decisions, and outcomes across a broader book
- Technical Depth: Strong understanding of risk selection, pricing discipline, and portfolio management
- Strategic Perspective: Ability to step back from individual deals and drive performance at a segment level
- Execution Style: Comfortable operating in an environment where you are accountable for both direction and measurable outcomes
The Payoff
- Real Influence: Ability to shape underwriting direction and portfolio performance—not just contribute to it
- Aligned Structure: Closer integration between underwriting and distribution reduces friction and improves execution
- Platform Growth: Opportunity to step into a leadership role within a growing specialty P&C insurance platform
- Competitive Package: 150K – 250K+ total comp with strong base plus variable upside tied directly to portfolio results and performance
