Supervisory Responsibilities: This position oversees Department of Public Safety personnel including the Patrol Supervisor, the Patrol Guards, the Administrative Assistant for Public Safety, and any student workers in Public Safety.

Summary Description: The Director of Public Safety provides leadership to the University by developing and implementing safety and security protocols that provides the most reasonable campus community protection.

Essential Functions:

• As an intentionally Christian academic community hiring Christian educators, all employees will be expected to advance the mission, vision, and identity of Carson-Newman University as defined in university policy and expressed in our strategic plan and are expected to work as cooperative and collegial members of the University.

• As Christian educators, all employees of the University should regularly attend and actively participate in a local church.
• Serves as main point of contact for campus guests. Provides parking passes, keys and when necessary, coordinates with President's Office for any special guests.
• Develops and implements various quality educational programs regarding safety and security related to the University's students and employees to ensure a reasonably safe and secure campus.
• Provides for the screening and hiring of the non-commissioned, licensed security officers and ensures they meet both State and University requirements.
• Provides for the training, supervision, and job performance evaluations of the administrative assistant and student workers.
• Collects and submits crime data mandated by both Federal and State laws and submits the data in a timely matter to the U. S. Department of Education.
• Maintains a close rapport and works with the various off-campus emergency responders, police fire, EMS/EMA who provide professional assistance to the University in safety and security matters.
• Develops and manages the University's parking protocol to include written policies, issuance of student and staff parking decals, issuance of traffic citations, and hearing of traffic appeals.
• Provides adequate security personnel, including the use of off-campus armed law enforcement officers, for all sanctioned University events to include athletics, academics, as well as for outside organized programs.
• Plans for and manages an annual budget for the department that meets or exceeds the expectations for salaries, procurement of equipment, and training needs.
• Maintains campus security systems including building alarm systems and campus cameras.

Education: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree desirable.

Experience: A minimum of seven years of experience in a previous position related to law enforcement and emergency management, including at least three years of supervision.

Required Skills: An excellent understanding of both Federal and State laws related to the handling and reporting of crimes on college campuses, providing adequate training for security officers, students, and staff of a college community, and knowing how to address a myriad of emergencies that may arise. The Director must have a pleasing personality necessary for working with students, staff, and other persons in support of the mission of the University.
