Director of Projects

S&R Enterprises

The Director of Projects ensures the successful delivery of all projects, overseeing planning, budgeting, and execution. This role provides executive oversight, guiding project managers and teams to meet their goals. The Director also upholds company values, contributes to leadership decisions, and fosters the growth of the project management department while optimizing resources and manpower across the organization.

The Director of Projects is accountable for a portfolio of approximately 15-20 active projects representing $60-100 million in annual revenue. Individual projects typically range from $4 million to $50 million.


The role directly manages 8-10 project managers and 1-2 project support employees and supports the allocation of approximately 400 field employees. Projects are primarily steel erection for pharmaceutical, medical, manufacturing, stadiums, space industry, and data centers, completed across all 50 states and the Caribbean.

Core Responsibilities

Oversee the Projects - Oversight and Management of All Upcoming & Active Projects

As the Director of Projects, you oversee all projects from start to finish, ensuring they are on budget, on schedule, and efficiently managed. You review and approve budgets, schedules, and change orders. You support project teams by addressing challenges and keeping communication open through regular meetings. Additionally, you step in to manage projects when needed.

Oversee the People - Develop & Grow/Maintain the Project Management Department/Staff

The Director of Projects develops and leads the project management team, ensuring alignment with the company's core values, vision, and mission. You oversee the team, manage manpower allocation across projects, and maintain a companywide jobs schedule. You train, mentor, and coach project managers to help them achieve their performance goals.

Oversee Department - Develop, update, and implement corporate project management policies and procedures as required.

The Director of Projects manages the project management department by developing and implementing policies and procedures. You actively participate in and guide leadership meetings, collaborate with the Director of Field Operations to ensure proper project staffing and work with the quality control team on audit preparation and execution. 


Activities

Oversee the Projects - Oversight and Management of All Upcoming & Active Projects

  • Project Oversight and Executive Management: In overseeing all projects, provide executive management and direction, ensuring that projects run smoothly and efficiently. Take charge of managing projects when other project managers are unavailable or when dealing with large or complex projects, ensuring that every aspect is under control.
  • Budget and Change Order Management: Review and approve all project change orders, budgets, and budget updates to ensure that costs are accurately accounted for and that projects remain profitable. Monitor project budgets closely to maintain cost-effectiveness, ensuring all added costs are submitted and priced to maximize profitability.
  • Project Scheduling and Planning: Monitor project schedules closely, tracking major milestones and progress to ensure timely completion. Oversee preconstruction and planning activities to meet project goals and prepare for successful execution.
  • Manpower and Resource Management: Collaborate with the Director of Field Operations to forecast and manage manpower needs for all projects. This ensures that the right resources are allocated efficiently to meet project demands.
  • Support and Communication: Provide support to both project management and field supervision teams by addressing any issues or obstacles that arise. Lead regular project meetings to foster communication and coordination among field teams, project managers, and executive management, ensuring everyone is aligned and informed.

Oversee the People - Develop & Grow/Maintain the Project Management Department/Staff

  • Manpower Supervision and Allocation: Supervise and allocate manpower for all projects, maintaining and updating comprehensive companywide jobs and manpower schedules to optimize resource use.
  • Staff Growth and Management: Oversee the growth and management of project management staff, including coordinating training programs to enhance their skills and capabilities.
  • Coaching and Mentoring: Coach, train, and mentor project managers, guiding them to meet their performance objectives and excel in their roles.

Oversee Department - Develop, update, and implement corporate project management policies and procedures as required.

  • Policy Development and Implementation: Develop, update, and implement corporate project management policies and procedures to ensure they meet organizational needs and standards.
  • Leadership Committee Participation: Actively participate in the S&R Core Leadership Committee and meetings, contributing to strategic discussions and decision-making processes.
  • Audit Preparation and Execution: Work with the S&R Corp Quality Control team to prepare for and execute AISC audits, ensuring inspection compliance and readiness.

Measurables

  • Project Profitability: Percentage of projects completed within or above projected profitability margins.
  • Employee Engagement/Retention: Quarterly engagement scores and annual retention rates within the project management team.
  • Project Schedules: Percentage of projects completed on time or ahead of schedule.
  • Policy and Process Adherence: Compliance rate with updated project management policies and procedures.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Post-project customer feedback scores or Net Promoter Score (NPS).
  • Pre-Planning Completion: Completion percentage of pre-construction plans and approvals before project start.
  • Construction Milestones: Completion rates of major construction milestones as per scheduled deadlines.
  • Project Close-Out Efficiency: Average time to finalize and close out completed projects.

Additional Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of construction project management experience, including responsibility for a portfolio of at least $20 million annually, individual projects of at least $4 million, and direct leadership of at least 6 project managers.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field; MBA or equivalent is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in construction project management, with at least 5 years in a leadership or director-level role.
  • Certifications: PMP, CCM, or equivalent certifications preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in project management software (e.g., Procore, Microsoft Project) and strong understanding of budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated experience in managing large teams, mentoring project managers, and leading through challenging projects.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to navigate complex project issues, make quick decisions, and provide solutions under tight timelines.

Pay Range

  • Compensation is extremely competitive based on experience and qualifications. Base: $200k-$250k
  • Potential for performance-based bonuses aligned with project profitability and employee engagement goals.
