Position Details
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages all phases of the transportation and facilities management organization in order to provide a safe and
healthy environment which is aesthetically pleasing and conducive to the learning process, and which enhances
the teacher and public service functions of the school district. Directs facilities assessment, design and
construction for renovations and capital improvement projects; coordinates and directs operations and
maintenance for all buildings, grounds, utilities and capital equipment. Manages the human and financial
resources of the office of transportation and facilities management in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree preferred. Combination of academic/technical education, directly related work
experience, and supervisory experienced may be substituted.
- MSBO Certified Facilities and/or Operation Director preferred or must obtain within 3years.
- Minimum of 3 years of supervisory/leadership experience (personnel and operations) and
preferably in a school setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge in custodial operations and the maintenance areas of electricity, plumbing,
HVAC, carpentry and grounds.
- Must be able to become certified in environmental areas such as:
o Asbestos Regulations
o Pesticide Applications
- Experience in school transportation.
- Possess and maintain the State of Michigan Transportation Supervisor Certificationpreferred.
- Ability to analytically evaluate the needs of the district' facilities and effectively assign and manage
personnel and third-party contractors accordingly.
- Experience working with vendors and accessing emergency services.
- Experience managing capital and/or bond expenditure projects preferred.
- Excellent management, organizational and supervisory skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in the formal bidding process.
- Experience with card key entry systems.
- Building Management system acumen preferred (i.e. the Niagara operating system).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages the overall operations of the transportation and facilities departments, including the
performance of maintenance and custodial tasks, planning and implementation of environmental and
safety programs, design and construction of renovations and capital improvementprojects.
- Establishes department goals and objectives, priorities and schedules.
- Directs and monitors the district's long-range facilities assessments for capital programs, with
periodic reports to the Superintendent or designee.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the applicable collective bargaining agreements and otherwise
foster a positive labor-management relationship.
- Conducts the hiring of, training, evaluation, discipline and effective utilization of all employees,
including subs.
- Supervise and maintain appropriate records for payroll, overtime and vacation schedules.
- Participates in the collective bargaining process and grievance hearings for the custodial and
bus driver unions.
- 24 hour on-call responsibility for all district-wide building/operations problems, emergencies and
snow removal plan.
- Budgetary responsibility for the departments and personnel under his/her supervision.
- Assist in the preparation of specifications for equipment and supplies to be purchased for
maintenance and transportation departments.
- Ability to work cooperatively with district Central Administration in the identification, assessment,
planning, cost analysis, and the preparation of bid specifications, as well as working with outside
contractors on a day-to-day maintenance and building issues.
- Oversees the administration of service contracts for maintenance, repair and other services affecting
facilities, systems and equipment.
- Responsibility for district compliance with all local, state and federal regulations that are related to
the facilities, grounds, operations and personnel under his/her supervision; including but not limited
to energy conservation, MIOSHA regulations, EPA regulations, fire codes, asbestos management, ADA
regulations, Storm Water regulations, etc.
- Assures organizational compliance with applicable codes, rules, regulations, and boardpolicies.
- Report weather and school conditions for emergency school closing as directed by the
Superintendent or designee.
- Prepares Facility Advisory Committee agenda items related to facilities and construction projects and
prepares progress reports on construction, renovation and facility/maintenance work.
- Responsible for the maintenance and operation of all school owned vehicles in thedistrict.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee.
