Careerscape is recruiting on behalf of our client, a state park facility in New York, for an experienced Director of Operations to lead day-to-day management of one of the region's premier outdoor destinations. This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of a high-visibility public property, overseeing everything from grounds and facilities to guest services and seasonal staffing, while shaping the visitor experience for hundreds of thousands of guests each year.

Day-to-day, this role feels like running a small city: coordinating maintenance crews, monitoring safety and compliance across trails and public spaces, managing budgets and vendor contracts, and stepping in wherever operational gaps appear. The person who thrives here is a hands-on leader who is equally comfortable walking a job site in work boots and presenting a capital budget to stakeholders, someone who loves the outdoors, takes pride in public service, and can keep a large, seasonal, multi-department team aligned toward a great visitor experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations across grounds, facilities, maintenance, and visitor services
  • Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets
  • Supervise, schedule, and mentor full-time and seasonal staff across multiple departments
  • Ensure compliance with state safety, environmental, and accessibility regulations
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair of trails, buildings, utilities, and recreational infrastructure
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships for services and capital projects
  • Respond to and coordinate emergency and public safety incidents on park grounds
  • Partner with regional and state park leadership on long-term planning initiatives
  • Monitor visitor feedback and implement improvements to guest experience
  • Prepare operational reports and present updates to senior leadership

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in park management, business administration, or related field preferred
  • Seven or more years of operations or facilities management experience
  • Prior supervisory experience leading teams of 15 or more
  • Experience managing budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships
  • Strong knowledge of safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance standards
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and respond to on-site emergencies
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with scheduling, budgeting, and reporting software
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to work weekends and holidays as needed

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • State pension and retirement plan options
  • Generous paid time off and holiday schedule
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Tuition assistance and professional development opportunities
  • Employee wellness programs
  • On-site parking
  • Uniform and equipment allowance
  • Opportunities for career advancement within the state park system
