Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Director of Finance for a highly respected nonprofit performing arts organization in New York City. This organization has a longstanding presence in the performing arts community, bringing ambitious contemporary work to audiences while creating opportunities for artists and advancing the vibrancy of American theater. With a sophisticated approximately $30M operating budget, diverse earned and contributed revenue streams, and an exciting slate of programming ahead, this is a unique opportunity for an accomplished finance leader to help steward the financial strength of an organization where creativity, mission, and sound financial leadership come together.

This is a full-time, direct-hire, hybrid opportunity based in New York, NY, with three days onsite and two days offering remote flexibility.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Finance will serve as a key financial leader and strategic partner to the Executive Director, senior leadership, and Board, overseeing the full scope of finance and accounting for a complex performing arts organization. Leading an established three-person finance team, this individual will combine strong technical accounting expertise with thoughtful leadership, financial planning, team development, and the ability to translate financial information into meaningful guidance for stakeholders across the organization. This is an ideal opportunity for a finance leader who enjoys staying close to the numbers while also contributing at the organizational level and partnering with creative and operational leaders to turn ambitious programming into financially sustainable work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead financial management for an approximately $30M nonprofit organization, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, financial analysis, banking, accounts payable and receivable, and oversight of complex earned and contributed revenue streams.
  • Partner closely with the Executive Director, senior leadership, department heads, and Board Finance Committee to develop budgets, monitor organizational performance, present financial information, and provide thoughtful analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop an established Finance team, providing technical guidance while assessing workflows, strengthening processes and controls, and remaining hands-on when complex accounting or operational issues arise.
  • Oversee monthly and quarterly financial reporting, annual audits, Form 990 and state reporting, GAAP compliance, organizational insurance programs, regulatory requirements, and appropriate tracking and reporting of restricted funding.
  • Collaborate with Development and other organizational leaders around gift accounting, pledged and restricted contributions, ticketing and earned revenue, fundraising activity, and the reconciliation of financial information across departments and systems.
  • Serve as a collaborative financial partner across a creative organization, helping leaders navigate evolving budgets and priorities while maintaining financial discipline, identifying solutions, and clearly communicating areas of opportunity, flexibility, and risk.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Deep knowledge of nonprofit finance and GAAP, with experience leading accounting, budgeting, forecasting, audits, financial reporting, and financial operations within a complex nonprofit organization; performing arts experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical accounting expertise and a hands-on leadership approach, with the ability to understand the details, troubleshoot financial issues, strengthen processes, and provide guidance to an established finance team.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop finance professionals while serving as an approachable and trusted partner to executive, creative, development, and operational leaders.
  • Experience communicating complex financial information to senior leadership and Boards or Finance Committees, paired with excellent judgment, discretion, maturity, and communication skills.
  • Strong technology and systems capabilities, including advanced Excel skills and experience with platforms such as NetSuite, Tessitura, or comparable financial systems; CPA designation is valued but not required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This position offers a competitive salary range of $170,000-$180,000, depending on experience.
