Director of Finance
Remote (US); NYC area preferred. We're remote-first with a real cluster in NYC, where we're loosely anchored.
You'll run our entire finance function - personally. Close, AP/AR, payments, treasury, invoicing, royalties. There's no team under you and won't be for a while. We may bring in an outsourced bookkeeping firm for some of the mechanics - you'll pick them and manage them - but the close, the judgment, and the numbers stay yours.
That foundation earns the second half of the job. We want to understand what each partner costs us to serve, what we invest in them, and how revenue actually breaks down - answers that shape which deals we pursue. You'll define the methodology, build the model, and explain what it means, on books you closed yourself.
Realistically, year one is about 70% operations and 30% analysis. That balance shifts over time because you built the machinery that lets it shift - not because someone arrives to take the operational work off your plate.
You'll report to the COO and work closely with both them and the CEO.
What You'll Do
Financial operations: Month-end close, start to finish. Bank and card reconciliations, AP, invoicing and collections, expense processing, payroll oversight, treasury and cash management, and the multi-state and international filings that come with a distributed team.
Revenue & licensing: Full-cycle invoicing, rev-share and royalty calculations, licensor reporting and minimum guarantees.
FP&A and vendors: Budget, forecast, and runway. You'll also run our outsourced bookkeeping bake-off, pick the firm, and manage them and our CPA/tax partners to keep us audit-ready.
Partner-level economics: Cost-to-serve, investment, and revenue by partner, built to inform deal strategy
Who this Isn't For
This isn't a corporate development, strategic finance, or BizOps role. No deal team, no analyst, no controller beneath you. If the operational half reads as the price of admission for the strategic half, this will be a frustrating job.
What You Need
Hands-on operator: You've personally executed end-to-end monthly closes - not reviewed them, not managed someone who did. You've run finance at a company small enough that you were also doing the data entry, and recently enough that it's still muscle memory.
Final authority: 8+ years in finance/accounting, including seed-to-Series A. You've been the most senior finance person in a company or business unit, the last reviewer with no one above you catching errors. Strong GAAP.
Complex revenue: Royalties, rev-share, usage-based, or similar structures - required. Media, gaming, or licensing background ideal.
Analytical range: You've built unit economics from scratch - allocating shared cost to get to per-customer or per-product profitability, and defending the methodology when the answer is unflattering.
Details: Organized and detail-oriented, with the judgment to know when to pull in a specialist. MBA or CPA is a plus, not a requirement.
What We Offer
Salary Range: $140,000 - $170,000 (depending on experience / location), and Equity
Benefits: health, dental, vision, 401K, unlimited PTO
