    About S.E.T., Inc.

S.E.T., Inc. is a growing heavy civil contractor specializing in highway, bridge, and infrastructure construction across Ohio and surrounding states. As a $100M+ contractor, we are focused on disciplined growth, operational excellence, and building strong internal systems to support long-term expansion.

We're hiring a Director of Finance & Accounting to lead our accounting department and serve as a strategic financial partner to executive leadership as we invest in technology, process improvement, and scalable systems.

    Position Overview

S.E.T. is seeking an experienced and hands-on Director of Finance & Accounting to lead our accounting department and serve as a strategic financial partner to executive leadership. This position is ideal for a construction accounting professional who enjoys improving processes, building systems, solving business problems, and helping organizations grow.

Unlike a traditional corporate finance position, this role combines executive-level financial leadership with hands-on ownership of the accounting department — leading the monthly close, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, banking relationships, cash management, and accounting operations while driving continuous improvement throughout the department. This individual will become the Company's senior financial leader and will play a key role in shaping the future of our organization.

Success in this role is measured not only by accurate financial statements, but by the value provided to the business — strengthening internal controls, improving visibility into company performance, and building scalable financial systems.

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Leadership

    • —Lead the Company's financial operations and serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership
    • —Develop financial strategies supporting company growth; provide financial analysis for business decisions
    • —Develop executive financial dashboards; identify financial risks and opportunities

    Accounting Operations

    • —Own the monthly and annual close process; review journal entries and general ledger activity
    • —Prepare and review financial statements; oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting
    • —Review account reconciliations and maintain fixed asset records
    • —Manage sales and use tax compliance; coordinate annual audits; ensure GAAP compliance

    Construction Accounting

    • —Oversee Work-in-Progress reporting and review job cost reporting
    • —Monitor contract profitability and review revenue recognition
    • —Support equipment accounting and review indirect cost allocations
    • —Understand union payroll accounting and support certified payroll reporting; monitor project financial performance

    Financial Planning

    • —Develop annual budgets and maintain rolling financial forecasts and cash flow projections
    • —Support banking relationships and bonding capacity; evaluate financing alternatives and analyze capital investments

    Process Improvement

    • —Reduce month-end close time and improve reporting accuracy; standardize procedures
    • —Implement automation where practical; improve internal controls; document accounting processes and build scalable financial systems

    Leadership

    • —Lead the accounting department; coach and develop team members; establish accountability
    • —Build a culture of ownership; improve communication across departments; partner closely with Operations
    Qualifications

    Required

    • —Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance
    • —10+ years of progressive accounting experience
    • —5+ years of construction accounting experience
    • —Previous Controller or Assistant Controller experience
    • —Strong understanding of job cost accounting, work-in-progress reporting, revenue recognition, financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, banking, and bonding
    • —Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

    Preferred

    • —CPA designation
    • —Heavy Civil construction experience
    • —Multi-entity accounting; union contractor experience; certified payroll experience
    • —ERP implementation experience
    • —Power BI / business intelligence experience; Microsoft Power Platform familiarity
    • —Process improvement leadership
    What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate enjoys building organizations, not simply maintaining them. They are naturally curious, ask questions, improve systems, and challenge outdated processes respectfully. They think like a business leader while maintaining the discipline of an accounting professional. Most importantly, they take ownership.

    • —An accomplished finance leader with a strong track record in construction accounting and financial leadership
    • —Someone who wants to build the financial infrastructure of a growing construction company, not just process transactions and close the books
    • —A team player who collaborates well with Operations and Executive Leadership
    Compensation & Benefits
    • —Competitive salary commensurate with experience
    • —Performance-based bonus opportunity
    • —Health insurance
    • —Retirement plan with employer match
    • —PTO & holidays
    • —An executive-level opportunity to shape the future of a growing $100M+ organization
