Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

University Advancement elevates UNCG's reputation, advances institutional strategy, and fosters community pride through integrated communications aligned with its public mission as a student-centered research university. The department develops and executes strategic communications and marketing initiatives that enhance visibility, engage key audiences, and convey the University's distinctive value. Working across schools, colleges, and administrative units, University Communications manages media relations, marketing campaigns, content strategy, branding, digital engagement, sponsorships, and crisis communications.

Position Summary

The Director, Office of Enrollment Communications, will serve as the primary strategic leader for the University's enrollment marketing efforts. The director will closely collaborate with leadership in the Division of Enrollment Management, The Graduate School, the Division of Student Success, University Communications, and various academic units to develop data-driven marketing strategies that increase enrollment (on-campus and online) and improve student experience. This individual is responsible for identifying and understanding marketing needs and leading the planning and executing of multiple, complex integrated campaigns that will drive University enrollment. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Annual strategic planning for marketing campaigns (collateral/direct mail/advertising) to support undergraduate and graduate student recruitment (on-campus and online), admission communications, new student onboarding, Financial Aid, Registration, and other business processes for enrolled students.
  • Website management for multiple entities including Enrollment, Admissions, Graduate School, and Spartan Central (Financial Aid, Registrar, and Cashiers Office).
  • Administration and oversight of content creation for communication-related elements of Undergraduate Admissions and Graduate School CRM systems.

This position will be supported by a team of digital and traditional marketing professionals, including strategic experts, project managers, and a small creative staff (copywriting/design). The director will lead the department staff to work with agility and knowledge, which requires a leader who possesses a breadth of marketing/communications experience and a willingness to roll up their sleeves and do project-level work at times. They should be as savvy at developing new strategies as they are at executing them.

The ideal individual must have a well-rounded knowledge of integrated marketing communications disciplines and a track record of executing on strategic campaigns that exceed expectations while remaining on time and on budget.

This individual must demonstrate a commitment to continual learning - for themselves and their staff members - to stay on top of industry trends. Expert leadership skills are required and should include presentation skills, budget management, reporting, consulting, supervision, and a track record of staff development. Some project management, copywriting, and basic graphic design skills will be required on occasion. Prior experience managing print projects, especially in a higher-ed setting, is ideal.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates for this position must possess a Master's Degree + at least 12 years professional marketing experience, or a Bachelor's Degree + at least 15 years professional marketing experience. Experience must include:

  • 8+ years in a strategic planning capacity, collaborating with a team to brainstorm and execute on complex, creative ideas that meet company goals.
  • 5+ years supervisory experience.
  • 3+ years in roles with budget accountability.
  • 3+ years work experience in higher education.

Additional minimum qualification requirements:

  • Proven track record of success in developing and executing creative, data-driven marketing campaigns that deliver results.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects across a variety of channels with fast-paced timelines.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written and the ability to build strong and collaborative cross-functional relationships.
  • Experience leading a team of writers, designers, project managers, digital marketers, external vendors, and project owners to deliver efficient output and results.
  • Proven attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible and extended schedule including weekends and evenings on occasion for University events, filming, etc.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive work experience in higher ed, specifically in roles supporting recruitment and enrollment marketing for large, public universities.

  • Expertise in best practices and regulations around bulk mail, CAN-SPAM, GDPR, web privacy, and other regulatory guidelines.

  • Copywriting and design capabilities (to include Adobe Creative Suite).

  • Advertising/Marketing agency experience (either as a client or as an agency representative).

  • Experience in any of the following areas:

  • Print project management.

  • Coordinating and directing photo/video shoots.

  • Email/Text comm flow design.

  • Knowledge of any of the following:

  • Google Analytics

  • Google AdWords

  • WordPress

  • Emma (or similar) email platform
