The Role: Director of Energy Strategy

The Director of Energy Strategy develops and executes commercial energy strategies that support Switchs large-scale data center growth. This role works across wholesale power and natural gas markets, energy origination, utility strategy, fuel supply and transportation, generation development, renewable procurement, financial analysis, and commodity risk management.

You will originate, evaluate, negotiate, and manage complex power and fuel supply solutions across regulated and competitive markets. Your work will help Switch improve speed-to-power, reliability, cost competitiveness, risk management, and sustainability across current and future campuses.

This is a hands-on role that combines energy market expertise with commercial execution. You will develop strategies, build financial models, negotiate agreements, manage counterparties, and translate complex energy decisions into clear recommendations for senior leadership.

    What Youll Do

    • Develop power trading and risk management strategies for physical and financial energy exposure, including forward purchases, basis risk, congestion, capacity, ancillary services, renewable energy credits, settlements, and budget-to-actual performance.

    • Develop natural gas strategies for on-site and near-site generation, including firm supply, transportation, storage, balancing, pipeline interconnections, taps, laterals, metering, and regulation facilities.

    • Lead the commercial development of gas lateral solutions in partnership with pipelines, local distribution companies, utilities, landowners, engineers, Construction, Legal, permitting consultants, and project teams.

    • Develop campus energy strategies that translate load growth, development schedules, utility constraints, and market fundamentals into executable power supply plans.

    • Originate, evaluate, and negotiate utility service arrangements, special contracts, retail supply, bilateral power purchases, PPAs, tolling structures, capacity products, hedges, and other commercial energy structures.

    • Build and maintain relationships with utilities, ISOs and RTOs, gas pipelines, marketers, generators, retail suppliers, renewable and battery developers, regulators, consultants, and other counterparties.

    • Monitor power and natural gas fundamentals, utility tariffs, regulatory proceedings, transmission constraints, interconnection timelines, fuel availability, emissions requirements, and large-load policy developments.

    • Partner with Finance and Development to build financial models, delivered-cost-of-power analyses, scenarios, sensitivities, project economics, investment materials, and customer-facing energy cost inputs.

    • Support renewable and carbon-free energy procurement, including project screening, PPA evaluation, REC strategies, storage, and hybrid resource structures.

    • Partner with generation development teams to evaluate gas turbines, reciprocating engines, fuel cells, battery storage, demand response, microgrids, and other supply-side and demand-side resources.

    • Develop tools, dashboards, and reporting processes for load forecasts, commodity positions, power and gas prices, exposures, settlements, development milestones, cost performance, and market risks.

    • Partner with Legal, Finance, Site Development, Engineering, Construction, Operations, Sustainability, Sales, and executive leadership to align energy strategy with campus delivery and customer commitments.

    • Prepare executive presentations, market briefings, investment materials, and decision packages that clearly explain commercial options, economics, risks, and recommendations.

    • Represent Switch in commercial discussions and stakeholder forums with utilities, suppliers, developers, regulators, and infrastructure partners.

    What Were Looking For

    • You connect energy market conditions, infrastructure constraints, commercial structures, and business needs to develop practical solutions.

    • You make sound decisions by balancing speed, cost, reliability, risk, sustainability, and long-term value.

    • You can create a path forward when power availability is constrained or the solution is not obvious.

    • You negotiate complex commercial agreements with clear objectives and disciplined judgment.

    • You move comfortably between strategy and execution, including market research, financial modeling, negotiations, and executive presentations.

    • You communicate complex market, regulatory, technical, and financial information in clear, decision-ready terms.

    • You build trusted relationships across internal teams, utilities, counterparties, regulators, and infrastructure partners.

    • You take ownership of complex workstreams and maintain consistent follow-through.

    • You remain effective as market conditions, project requirements, and priorities change.

    What Youll Bring

    • Experience negotiating or supporting complex energy agreements such as power purchase agreements, utility service agreements, retail supply agreements, gas supply agreements, firm transportation agreements, precedent agreements, interconnection agreements, or project development contracts.

    • Working knowledge of natural gas markets and infrastructure, including firm supply, transportation, pipeline laterals, local distribution company coordination, nominations, storage, balancing, and generation reliability.

    • Experience with renewable procurement, battery storage, demand response, distributed generation, fuel cells, gas-fired generation, or hybrid energy solutions.

    • Familiarity with state utility commission proceedings, FERC-regulated transmission or natural gas matters, utility rate cases, special contracts, large-load tariffs, or regulatory stakeholder processes.
