    Position Summary

    The Director of Emergency Services provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for a large, high-volume Emergency Department within a Level I Trauma Center. This leader is responsible for departmental operations, staffing, financial performance, quality outcomes, regulatory compliance, patient experience, and service-line growth.

    The Director will foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement while partnering closely with physicians, nursing leadership, and executive stakeholders.

    Facility & Department Scope

    • 926-bed acute care hospital
    • Level I Trauma Center
    • Approximately 350 Emergency Department visits per day
    • 100 Emergency Department beds
    • Approximately 200 FTEs
    • 4 direct-report managers
    • Union environment
    • Large emergency physician group partnership

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide executive oversight of Emergency Department operations.
    • Ensure delivery of safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain departmental policies and clinical standards.
    • Optimize patient throughput, staffing, productivity, and operational efficiency.
    • Lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
    • Maintain regulatory and accreditation compliance.
    • Champion patient experience and satisfaction initiatives.
    • Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain nursing leaders and staff.
    • Partner with physicians and executive leadership on strategic growth initiatives.
    • Manage departmental budgets, labor, productivity, supplies, and capital resources.
    • Monitor operational and clinical performance using measurable KPIs.
    • Drive continuous improvement across quality, safety, throughput, and service outcomes.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
    • Current Registered Nurse license in the applicable state.
    • Minimum of 5 years of Emergency Room RN experience in an inpatient acute-care hospital setting.
    • Minimum of 3 years of trauma nursing leadership experience.
    • At least 3–5 years of qualifying Director-level or equivalent Emergency Department leadership experience strongly preferred.
    • Leadership experience within a Level I or Level II Trauma Center.
    • Experience leading a large, high-volume Emergency Department comparable in size and complexity.
    • Strong hands-on knowledge of regulatory standards governing emergency services.
    • Demonstrated success leading quality, safety, throughput, operational, or patient-experience improvement initiatives.
    • Stable employment history.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree.
    • Union environment experience.
    • Experience managing large teams and multiple direct-report leaders.
    • Experience managing departmental budgets, productivity, staffing, and operational performance.

    Ideal Candidate Profile

    The successful candidate will be an experienced Emergency Services nursing executive who has led complex operations within a Level I or Level II Trauma Center. Candidates should be able to demonstrate measurable leadership accomplishments such as:
