    Director of Emergency Services - Marion, NC

    Full-Time Leadership | Monday-Friday Days, No Weekends | $78,894-$140,000 Annual Salary + 17.5-26.25% Incentive Bonus | Sign-On & Relocation Available

    Overview

    Lead emergency services at a 65-bed community hospital with a 15-bed emergency department in Marion, North Carolina, serving McDowell County with 26,000 annual visits. This Director of Emergency Services role oversees 50 FTEs and high-performing Clinical Nurse Coordinators (no managers) in a facility recognized by Leapfrog Group as Best Performer for pediatric imaging and "A" grade for Patient Safety. The hospital treats high-acuity patients and has a pending ER expansion project underway. The facility offers comprehensive services including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics, urology, obstetrics/gynecology with 5 labor and delivery suites, and walk-in care. The position reports to the CNO (4-year tenure) with a new Medical Director who started in June. Marion offers Blue Ridge Mountain beauty, low cost of living, outdoor recreation, and small-town community feel with proximity to Asheville.

    Responsibilities

    • Ensure high-quality, patient-centered emergency care through oversight of staffing, operations, forecasting, planning, and budget monitoring for 15-bed ED.
    • Foster culture of accountability and collaboration while supporting development and implementation of strategies, policies, and procedures.
    • Direct emergency department operations serving 26,000 annual visits with high-acuity patient population in community hospital setting.
    • Oversee 50 FTEs and high-performing Clinical Nurse Coordinators to deliver seamless emergency care and operational excellence.
    • Develop and implement evidence-based practices, policies, and procedures to advance patient safety and quality outcomes.
    • Manage departmental budget including revenue forecasting, expense monitoring, labor productivity, and resource allocation.
    • Monitor key performance indicators, patient satisfaction scores, and quality metrics to drive continuous improvement.
    • Ensure compliance with Leapfrog, Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulatory standards for emergency services.
    • Lead ER expansion planning and implementation to meet growing community needs and enhance service delivery.
    • Collaborate with new Medical Director, CNO, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize emergency care delivery.
    • Build and retain high-performing emergency teams through talent acquisition, coaching, performance management, and professional development.
    • Leverage feedback mechanisms to benchmark performance and identify opportunities to elevate patient experience.
    • Provide visible, accessible leadership supporting staff engagement and maintaining low turnover environment.
    • Ensure efficient patient flow, throughput, and care coordination in high-acuity community emergency setting.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Bachelor's Degree or approved education plan
    • Current North Carolina RN license in good standing or active multi-state compact license
    • Minimum 1 year of applicable emergency services leadership experience
    • Proven track record of strong metrics, performance achievements, and operational improvements (must be documented on resume)
    • Demonstrated expertise in emergency department operations and high-acuity patient care
    • Strong leadership, communication, and strategic planning skills
    • Financial acumen and budget management experience

    Preferred:

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
    • Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field
    • 3+ years of emergency services leadership experience
    • Very recent ED Manager experience will be considered
    • Experience in community hospital emergency departments
    • Background in ER expansion or facility development projects

    Compensation & Benefits

    • Annual Salary: $78,894-$140,000 based on experience
    • Annual Incentive Bonus: 17.5%-26.25% of base salary
