Job Title: Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)
Job Type: Full-Time
Location: Long Beach/Los Angeles
Position Summary
The Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is responsible for leading and managing compliance with all safety, health, environmental, and quality programs. This role plays a critical part in developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and procedures that reduce risk and ensure the safety of employees, contractors, vendors, and customers in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise senior leadership on EH&S compliance issues and preventative strategies
- Promote a strong safety culture across all operations
- Ensure compliance with EH&S policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
- Partner with operations management to provide guidance on EH&S-related matters
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement EH&S programs and strategies
- Mentor and develop EH&S personnel and operational teams
- Compile, analyze, and communicate EH&S performance metrics
- Lead or support incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Promote lessons learned and continuous improvement across the organization
- Support training program development, safety meetings, and presentations
- Manage workers compensation processes, including coordination with employees and providers
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities, equipment, and operations
- Identify and report unsafe conditions and ensure corrective action
- Develop and deliver safety training programs
- Participate in industry groups to share and learn best practices
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and inventory tracking
- Conduct site visits and support audits and inspections
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications & Skills
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, U.S. Coast Guard, and other applicable regulations
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to influence, coach, and develop teams
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and reporting systems
- Experience with incident investigation methods such as 5-Why and Root Cause Analysis
- Ability to interpret data, identify trends, and implement improvements
- High attention to detail and organizational skills
Requirements
- Bachelors degree in EH&S or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum of 6 years of safety management experience in marine, industrial, or similar environments
- Knowledge of maintenance operations, terminal activities, and vessel operations
- Ability to interpret union contracts
- Valid drivers license with a clean driving record
- Willingness to travel and respond to emergencies as needed
