Director of ConstructionOverview
The Director of Construction leads the General Construction department and oversees the organizational execution of commercial general construction projects. Reporting to the VP of Construction (with approval from Peyton Fairbank), this role is responsible for setting up and running core construction processes—subcontracting and job costing, safety, and contractor quality control—so projects are delivered professionally while maintaining strong profitability and efficiency.
Required Skills
  • GC leadership experience with a strong focus on commercial general construction
  • Ability to establish, educate, and implement subcontracting and job costing procedures
  • Proven experience implementing and supervising safety programs
  • Ability to establish and maintain contractor quality control procedures
  • Strong people leadership skills; ability to manage personnel resources within the department
  • Track record of providing leadership and guidance to project managers, superintendents, and construction administration support
  • Ability to ensure quality correspondence with owners, designers, and subcontractors
  • Experience maintaining excellent relationships with clients and subcontractors (current and new)
  • Strong ownership of project profitability and efficiency
  • Ability to visit job sites to review progress, field operations, quality, and safety
  • Experience reviewing and approving owner contracts, subcontracts, and pay applications
  • Ability to develop project startup and closeout procedures
  • Strong collaboration with other departments to support company goals and objectives
  • Administrative capability supporting construction administration (e.g., correspondence, coordination of team meetings, and related tasks)
Nice to Have Skills
  • Government construction experience (e.g., VA / Federal work)
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Four (4) year college or university degree
  • 10 to 15 years of related experience and/or training (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
Other Requirements
  • Full-time position
  • Must keep the VP of Operations informed of departmental operations on an as-needed basis, but at a minimum twice weekly
  • Able to work in office settings and moderate-to-loud construction jobsite conditions (hearing protection may be required)
  • Ability to perform essential physical demands including regular sitting; frequent standing and walking; occasional stooping/kneeling/crouching; and lifting/moving up to 10 lbs, with occasional moderate (25 lbs) to heavy (50 lbs) as required
