Director of After School Programming (Grades PK - 8)

The ideal candidate will possess related experience along with the drive and vision to elevate current programming and expand the menu of offerings to include off-site activities such as theater, water polo and gardening, and cultivate partnerships with local organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club to support this expansion of the program. Importantly, the Director of After School Programming will conduct a critical review and assessment of all current after school activities and will oversee the design and execution of enhanced offerings that will elevate after school care to be a signature program that drives enthusiastic subscription and is a selling point supporting PK through grade 8 enrollment.

Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory, boarding and day school with enrollment of 750 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson School is seeking a Director of After School Programming (Grades PK - 8) to start September 1, 2026. The Director of After School Programming will report to the heads of the middle and lower divisions and will hold primary responsibility for the effective and timely planning, scheduling, facilitation, and communication of after school programming on the Carmel Campus. 

In this capacity, the Director of After School Programming is responsible for the engagement, safety, and tracking of PK-8 students involved in after school programming between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. daily. The Director of After School Programming is tasked with effective staffing and scheduling of program offerings and supporting all faculty and staff assigned to after school programs. 

Importantly, the Director of After School Programming will conduct a critical review and assessment of all current after school activities and will oversee the design and execution of enhanced offerings that will elevate after school care to be a signature program that drives enthusiastic subscription and is a selling point supporting PK through grade 8 enrollment. During the school day, the Director of After School Programming will participate in campus life via facilitation of assemblies and spot classroom coverage, as needed. This role will require planning and organization work during the summer break period including the securing of staffing for fall programs.

Responsibilities Include:

 

After School Programming

• Work with heads of lower and middle divisions to understand the overarching and evolving needs and goals of Stevenson’s after school program and ensure the delivery of high quality programming
• In collaboration with after school programming educators, determine appropriate age range and maximum capacity for programs and develop detailed descriptions of offerings 
• Provide timely, thorough, and compelling communication of program offerings, related logistics, and registration information
• Work with division heads and business office on financial aid considerations for any offering that involves a fee to participate
• Assign faculty and ASP staff ensuring appropriate coverage at all times
• Create opportunities for parent volunteers to lead activities and projects within their area of expertise 
• Collaborate with, guide, and support program educators in development of ASP curriculum with the goal of building a highly cohesive and compelling after school program that serves the needs of and generates enthusiasm among Stevenson students and families
• Create and conduct a user-friendly registration system in collaboration with the director of data operations to be executed within a reasonable time frame in advance of the commencement of each term
• Determine, facilitate, and communicate appropriate room assignments and outdoor area usage, securing special spaces as needed based on planned activities
• Work with program instructors to determine needed resources and source and organize materials in advance
• Ensure effective supervision for all students involved in after school activities
• Effectively troubleshoot problems, keeping relevant constituencies (program faculty and staff, administrators, school nurse, security officer, students, parents, as needed,) appropriately informed
• Encourage inclusive, healthy play to develop and improve students’ physical and social-emotional skills
• Act as source of reliable and timely ASP information for students, faculty, staff, families, and the broader school community 
• Manage substitute coverage for ASP workshops when needed, in partnership with divisional leadership
• Collaborate with and support MD AD in the coordination of MD athletics program
• Other duties as assigned

General Campus Duties

• Collaborate with middle division dean of students and lower division administration to plan and facilitate engaging assemblies for students in grades PK-8
• Daily lunch and/or recess duty, as assigned
• Other duties, as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Associate’s or higher level degree
• Genuine enthusiasm for working with students in PK-8 and demonstrated understanding of developmental stages within that range
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Collaborative approach
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Ability to calmly and effectively manage minor emergency situations, calling on appropriate resources and keeping all constituencies appropriately informed
• Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality and the integrity of all information disseminated within or external to the school community
• Commitment to being part of a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community

Preferred Qualifications:

• Some college-level credits in Early Childhood or Education preferred
• Related experience with school-age children and youth (PK-8) in educational or recreational settings, preferred
• Lesson planning/curriculum development experience preferred
• Experience leading or developing after-school or summer programs preferred
• CPR/First Aid certified, or willingness to be certified

 

This is a full-time, 12-month/year administrative staff position based on Stevenson’s Carmel campus. The anticipated salary range for this position is $68,000 - $75,000 annually, based on experience. Stevenson offers housing and fuel stipends for eligible employees. Meals are provided throughout the day when school is in session.
