Director of Accounting

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Director of Accounting to lead the company’s accounting operations within a civil construction environment. This role will oversee the accounting function, financial reporting, job costing, billing, and month-end close while partnering closely with operations and project leadership.

The Director of Accounting will also play an important role in improving accounting processes and reporting. The ideal candidate has strong civil construction accounting experience, understands project-based accounting and WIP, and is comfortable leveraging technology to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the accounting function.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting
• 
  
• Lead and develop the accounting team, providing direction, training, and accountability
• 
  
• Oversee month-end and year-end close processes and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
• 
  
• Manage civil construction accounting processes, including job costing, WIP, project financial reporting, billing, and cost tracking
• 
  
• Partner with project managers and operations leadership to improve financial visibility and project performance
• 
  
• Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial and project cost data
• 
  
• Review and improve accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls
• 
  
• Identify opportunities to streamline and automate accounting processes
• 
  
• Oversee the company’s accounting ERP and serve as a key resource for system functionality, reporting, and process improvements
• 
  
• Support system upgrades, enhancements, integrations, and improvements to accounting workflows
• 
  
• Develop and enhance financial and project reporting to provide leadership with meaningful insights into company and project performance
• 
  
• Maintain strong internal controls and support audit and compliance requirements
• 
  
• Troubleshoot accounting and system issues and provide guidance to accounting and operational users
• 
  
• Work cross-functionally with accounting, project management, operations, and leadership to improve accounting processes and financial visibility
• 
  

Qualifications:

• 
  
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 
  
• 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably within civil construction
• 
  
• Previous experience leading an accounting department or serving as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leader
• 
  
• Strong understanding of civil construction accounting, job costing, WIP, project reporting, and billing
• 
  
• Experience overseeing a full accounting function and month-end close
• 
  
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
• 
  
• Experience with accounting ERP systems; Foundation Software preferred
• 
  
• Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables, reporting, and data analysis
• 
  
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• 
  
• Ability to work effectively with accounting, project management, and operations teams
• 
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience managing or implementing accounting systems

• Foundation Software experience

• Experience improving accounting processes through automation or technology

• Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or other financial reporting tools
