    About the role

The Director, Internal Audit & Assurance leads the execution of Fortegra's annual internal audit plan across US and EU operations. You will manage audit engagements from scoping through reporting, lead SOX activities, and serve as a day-to-day point of contact for DB Insurance Co., our parent company. You will coach a team of auditors while remaining close enough to the work to review it with technical depth.

    What you'll do

    • Develop and execute the risk-based annual audit plan, covering financial, operational, compliance, and IT processes, including SOX, MGAs/TPAs, and IFRS.
    • Develop audit scopes and risk-based programs, and oversee fieldwork, testing, and documentation.
    • Review work prepared by others for accuracy, sufficiency of evidence, and adherence to Global Internal Audit Standards.
    • Prepare clear, well-supported audit reports and present results and recommendations to management.
    • Evaluate internal control documentation and processes and recommend practical improvements.
    • Lead SOX scoping, testing, and deficiency evaluation for US and EU entities.
    • Act as lead contact for external auditor inquiries, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
    • Support annual fraud and enterprise risk assessments.
    • Track management action plans and follow up on remediation.
    • Oversee testing of Board of Directors policies for EU entities.
    • Prepare materials for Audit Committee meetings and respond to ad-hoc requests.
    • Coach, mentor, and give constructive feedback to audit staff.
    • Build strong relationships with Finance, Legal, Compliance, IT, and business leaders at all levels of the organization.

    What you bring

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent.
    • 10+ years of audit, risk, or controls experience, including 3+ years in people leadership.
    • Insurance industry experience (including audit or consulting work for insurers).
    • Deep expertise in SOX, COSO, and Global Internal Audit Standards, with a strong grasp of information systems and financial reporting.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify control gaps and drive practical improvements.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work with all levels of the organization.

    Preferred

    • CPA, CIA, CISA, or CFE.
    • Familiarity with IFRS, COBIT, and IT general controls.
    • Experience with Oracle applications (E-Business Suite, OBIEE/OAC, Apex) and Blackline.
    • Experience auditing MGAs/TPAs or multi-line, geographically diverse organizations.
    • Data analytics experience.

What sets you up to succeed

    • Exercises independent judgment and takes initiative with limited direction.
    • Manages competing priorities across multiple entities and time zones.
    • Handles confidential information with discretion.
    • Coaches others and builds a collaborative, high-performing team.
    • Stays current through professional organizations and continuing education.
