Duties

The job responsibilities for this position of Director of Food Service for Jacksonville School District #117 are listed below:

• Provide leadership and direction in the implementation of assigned activities and /or projects (i.e. establishment of delivery schedules, designing, updating and preparation of special-order
• forms/computerized procedures and rollout of all technology programs for food service operations, etc.) in compliance with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
• Recommend the employment, assignments, and termination of all food service personnel.
• Develop all grade level appropriate menus and perform their nutritional analysis in compliance with USDA regulations.
• Approve the procurement of all food and supplies for the food service program.
• In collaboration with the Business Services Department, prepare specifications and recommend awards on all food, supplies, and equipment for the department.
• Comply with federal and state regulations to insure the district's entitlement dollars under the Child Nutrition Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
• Determine the most cost-effective use of Entitlement Donated Commodities and Department of Defense Commodities to be used in the food service program each school year.
• Review proper documentation to determine whether a price increase is indicated to maintain a positive fund balance for the department of Food and Nutrition Services.
• Define achievements, difficulties, and trends based on data gathered, establishing facts, and implementing strategies going forward.
• Observe reporting timelines, ensuring accuracy necessary for required audits.
• Respond to audit findings and provide recommended corrective action in non-compliance areas.
• Inspect all food service facilities at regular intervals to insure operational standards and procedures are maintained and enforced.
• Submit strategic plan, policies, and yearly budget to the Deputy Superintendent of Operations for approval.
• Coordinate all special functions involving nutrition services.
• Responsible for the annual evaluation of department employees using appropriate and prescribed procedures.
• Provide professional development training as recommended/required by the USDA (or at least twice yearly) conveying and/or gathering information to keep employees current in their field.
• Provide principals and teachers with instructional materials and information pertaining to classroom units on nutrition as requested.
• Accountable for the annual federal meal application process, and the information/assistance provided to parents.
• Other duties as assigned.

Staff Supervision:

• The Director of Food Service is a supervisory and managerial position that is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
• Supervise all activities for the operation of the Food Service Department, including activities relating to personnel.

Qualifications

Education & Certification Requirements

• Preferred: Minimum of Bachelor's degree with academic major or concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, hotel/restaurant management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field.
• Current Illinois Food Protection Manager Certificate or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
• School Nutrition Association Certification - Level 4 or above or ability to achieve within 9 months of employment.
• SNA School Nutrition Specialist Credential, preferred or ability to achieve within 18 months of employment.
• Illinois Manager's Sanitation Certificate from the Illinois Department of Public Health or required to obtain within 30 days of employee's starting date.
• Current Illinois Driver's License.

Experience / Knowledge

• Minimum of five years' relevant school nutrition program experience.
• Proven experience with computerized point of sale systems typically utilized in K-12.
• General knowledge of purchasing platforms used in K-12.
• Proven experience in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training staff preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
• Strong organizational skills and business acumen.
• Minimum of five (5) years in a leadership role supervising staff.
• Exhibits leadership and professionalism among coworkers, school staff and in public situations.
• Ability to work cooperatively with all stakeholders and with a diverse population.
• Ability to work under pressure, plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects at one time.
• Proficient skills in MS Office Suite, Google Drive, social media marketing, promotions, recipe development, financial acumen, and inventory

Salary/Benefits

Regionally competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience. Minium salary of $50,000/per year. Actual salary and benefits will be negotiated with finalists. Benefits include medical, vision, retirement, dental insurance, and life insurance.
