About the Role

A Confidential Client, partnered with Infinate Talent, is seeking a Director, Indirect Tax to lead multi-state sales and indirect tax operations during a critical period of modernization and ERP transformation. Reporting directly to the VP of Tax, this leader will oversee all indirect tax compliance, audits, and system process improvement efforts while managing and mentoring a small internal team.

This is a player-coach role ideal for a tax professional who thrives in a hands-on, high-accountability environment and is energized by building structure and performance into legacy processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee sales, use, and property tax compliance across ~40 U.S. jurisdictions.
  • Manage and improve the monthly sales tax filing process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Lead and mentor internal staff, fostering accountability and upskilling the existing team.
  • Act as point-of-contact for external auditors and taxing authorities.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, and IT during the company’s ERP system transition (Oracle & Workday).
  • Identify and implement process automation opportunities to reduce manual workload.
  • Support and strengthen controls to minimize risk and ensure tax compliance continuity.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to align indirect tax strategy with broader financial objectives.

What You Bring

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in indirect tax, including multi-state sales and use tax.
  • Background in Big Four public accounting or complex multi-entity corporate environments preferred.
  • Proven success leading or optimizing manual and legacy tax systems (AS/400) with the ability to adapt to ERP transitions.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills; able to manage multiple tight monthly deadlines.
  • Experience managing or overseeing tax audits and external relationships.
  • High emotional intelligence with the ability to earn trust from existing teams and drive change with empathy.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
