    Now Accepting Applications - Second Alternate Member

    The City of Williston is accepting applications for one Second Alternate Member position on the Board of Appeals.

    The Board of Appeals consists of five (5) members and two (2) alternate members appointed by the Board of City Commissioners for three-year terms. The Board hears appeals involving the interpretation and enforcement of the City of Williston Building Code after a decision has been made by the City Building Official.

    As the Second Alternate Member, you may be called upon to serve when a regular member or first alternate is unavailable. When serving, alternate members have the same authority and responsibilities as regular Board members.

    Board of Appeals Purpose

    The Board of Appeals provides an independent review of decisions made by the City Building Official regarding the interpretation and enforcement of the City of Williston Building Code. The Board may affirm, modify, or reverse those decisions in accordance with the Citys building code and applicable ordinances. All meetings are open to the public, and Board decisions are supported by written findings of fact.

    The Board serves an important role in ensuring that the Citys building code is applied consistently, fairly, and in accordance with adopted regulations.

    Responsibilities

    • Review appeals related to the interpretation and enforcement of the City Building Code.
    • Attend meetings and public hearings when called upon to serve.
    • Consider testimony and evidence presented during appeal hearings.
    • Apply the Building Code fairly and impartially.
    • Participate in deliberations and decisions supported by written findings of fact.

    Terms and Meetings

    • Three-year appointment by the Board of City Commissioners.
    • Meetings are held as needed when appeals are filed and are open to the public.
    • Members should be available to attend hearings when called upon.

    Qualifications

    Applicants should have an interest in serving the community and the ability to make fair, objective decisions. Experience or knowledge in construction, building trades, architecture, engineering, code enforcement, planning, or related fields is beneficial but is not required unless otherwise required by City Ordinance.

    How to Apply

    Application letters are due by August 21, 2026, at 3:00 pm.

    Applicants should submit a short letter describing their interest in serving on the Board of Appeals and any relevant experience or qualifications.

    Applications will be reviewed, and a recommendation for appointment will be presented to the Board of City Commissioners at a regularly scheduled meeting.
