JOB SUMMARY

Provide direct and appropriate care to the juvenile residents placed within the secure juvenile detention program located in Jefferson County. The level of this care shall include but not be limited to meeting all the basic and essential needs of the juvenile residents in accordance with the established policies, procedures, and program guidelines, along with the standards established for the operation of juvenile detention facilities by the Missouri Supreme Court. Close supervision is received from, and work is reviewed by the Shift Supervisor and the Assistant Superintendent of Detention.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Detention Aide workers shall be thoroughly familiar with the rights and privileges of the juvenile residents and ensure that these rights and privileges are not abridged.
  • Shall perform routine housekeeping duties as directed by established policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure the overall cleanliness of the secure detention program.
  • Participates in the development and presentation of recreational and multi-disciplinary programming for juvenile participants.
  • Participates in the initial orientation training for personnel assigned to the secure detention program and attends all subsequent training for staff as directed by the Assistant Superintendent of Detention and /or Superintendent of Detention.
  • Shall generate log entries, reports and all other documentation as required by the policies, procedures, and guidelines for the secure detention program, or as required by the Juvenile Officer.
  • Ensures the safety and security of the juveniles placed within the secure detention program through the constant and alert supervision of all activities taking place within the secure detention program.

Position Detention Aide I Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Possess a minimum of a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and be at least 19 years of age.
  • Prior experience in working with the youth, either professionally or on a volunteer basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of juvenile courts and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of Missouri statutes and laws regarding juvenile cases.
  • Basic knowledge of Juvenile Office services/programs and community resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • None

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The work also requires mental and visual acuity, speaking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling; picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand; grasping; picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand; hearing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed indoors in an office environment, in public meetings and in confined areas (i.e. vehicles). The employee will be required to occasionally work in outside conditions of extreme heat and cold temperatures during all seasons of the year, exposed to rough terrain and varying climatic and weather conditions. This position involves interaction with other employees and the general public and in potentially hostile situations. Many situations may require early morning and late evening hours.
