    Schedule: Monday-Friday, 0700-1530

    Position Summary

    The Destruction Center Operator performs the physical collection, transportation, sorting, safeguarding, destruction, and documentation of classified information, Restricted Data, CUI, and other sensitive materials generated throughout Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

    The position is an industrial, physically active role requiring routine lifting, operation of large destruction machinery, vehicle operation, equipment inspection, minor jam-clearing and maintenance activities, and strict compliance with security and safety procedures.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Coordinate with the Lead and NNSY points of contact regarding scheduled and emergent burn-bag pickups.
    • Operate a Government-owned vehicle to collect and transport burn bags across the shipyard.
    • Maintain required two-person integrity and chain of custody during collection, transportation, staging, storage, and destruction.
    • Load, unload, carry, stage, sort, and process burn bags and destruction material.
    • Inspect burn-bag contents and remove unauthorized or damaging materials before processing.
    • Operate industrial disintegrators and associated conveyor systems.
    • Operate the external air-evacuation system, compactor dumpster, degausser, NSA-approved shredders, and other Government-provided destruction equipment.
    • Operate backup shredders at the Destruction Center or remote NNSY locations during primary-equipment outages.
    • Remove and properly handle shredder waste and destroyed material.
    • Inspect the disintegrator system, ductwork, conveyor, cutting area, and outside air system.
    • Clear operator-caused jams and paper clogs using approved procedures and basic hand tools.
    • Immediately stop work and report conditions requiring Government maintenance or hazardous-energy-control procedures.
    • Safeguard classified material, CUI, Restricted Data, and associated records from unauthorized access or disclosure.
    • Assist with opening, closing, and maintaining the classified storage area.
    • Document collection runs, quantities processed, anomalies, equipment conditions, maintenance activities, and safety issues.
    • Perform alternate duties during equipment downtime, including staging, sorting, inventory control, chain-of-custody checks, housekeeping, security checks, and record updates.
    • Maintain the Destruction Center and associated work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
    • Report security violations, nonstandard materials, machine problems, injuries, near misses, or operational disruptions to the Lead.
    • Support unplanned and emergent destruction requirements as directed.

    Minimum Contract Qualifications

    • U.S. citizen.
    • Active/final Secret security clearance.
    • Eligible for and able to maintain Restricted Data access and a Red NAVSEA badge.
    • Able to successfully complete NNSY background screening, access, badging, security, and Privacy Act requirements.
    • Valid state driver's license.
    • Ability to operate a Government vehicle in an industrial shipyard environment.
    • Ability to repeatedly lift and move 25-50 pounds throughout the workday.
    • Ability to climb and traverse a vertical ladder exceeding 20 feet.
    • Ability to use required fall-protection equipment and a boom lift following training.
    • Ability to work around high-noise industrial machinery.
    • Ability to use basic hand tools and clear routine paper jams and clogs.
    • Ability to maintain a dependable work schedule.
    • Ability to understand instructions, accept correction and feedback, recognize hazards, and exercise sound judgment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in material handling, warehousing, recycling, records destruction, logistics, industrial production, or facility operations.
    • Experience operating industrial machinery, compactors, shredders, conveyors, or similar equipment.
    • Previous DoD, shipyard, classified-material, or secure-facility experience.
    • Familiarity with industrial safety, fall protection, Lockout/Tagout, or hazardous-energy-control practices.
