The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a Design Engineer I, II, or III to join its Engineering Bureau, a team of approximately 60 employees providing surveying, design, and construction management services for public works capital improvement projects. The Bureau manages a diverse portfolio of 75 to 100 projects, ranging from $100,000 to $10 million in construction costs, including transportation, stormwater, water, sewer, and other infrastructure improvements. Consulting services are utilized as needed to support project delivery.
Engineer III (senior level) performs the duties of the position independently; Engineer II (journey level) performs the work with limited supervision; and Engineer I (entry level) performs the work under close guidance and supervision.

Substitution: Experience may not be substituted for the Engineering Degree requirement. A Master's Degree in Civil Engineering may be substituted for one year of Engineering experience.

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. Driver's License: This position will require travel around Arlington County for various meetings and field inspections. The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Additional Information
Employees that are registered as Professional Engineer will be eligible for an additional pay premium of $2,600 annually.
Work Hours: Flexible work schedule, Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with teleworking opportunities. Employees must be able to attend occasional local and state events, some which may be outside regular hours.
The official job titles are Engineer I, II and III. The positions are part of a multi-grade career ladder from junior through senior and the overall annual salary range is $83,158.40 - $149,240.00. Individuals appointed to positions can progress through each level based on a combination of education, experience, and the achievement of competencies.

Engineer I: $83,158.40-$128,876.80
Engineer II: $87,318.40 - $135,324.80
Engineer III: $96,304.00 -$149,240.00
