    The City of Hamptons Community Development Department is seeking a forward-thinking Deputy Director with the experience and vision to help shape the community's long-term growth and development. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in long-range planning, comprehensive and master plan development and implementation, and the drafting and administration of planning ordinances and regulations. Candidates should be experienced in translating community goals and policy direction into thoughtful, sustainable development strategies and actionable plans. A background in architecture, urban design, or a closely related field is highly preferred, as is demonstrated success working across disciplines to create high-quality, vibrant, and resilient communities.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Architecture, Engineering, Planning, Building Construction Technology, Public Administration, or a related field of study.
    • Requires a minimum of five (5) years of local, state, or federal government experience in a field relevant to the key areas of the CDD.
    • Requires a minimum of three (3) years of experience serving in progressively responsible managerial, supervisory, or senior leadership roles.
    • Requires a proven track record in setting and achieving strategic goals; demonstrating leadership in support of organizational mission and values; working collaboratively with a diverse customer base to deliver effective solutions with a keen commitment to excellent customer service; maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency in exercising duties and responsibilities.
    • Ability to: develop and manage long and short-range plans; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and make effective presentations.
    • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively embrace diversity by fostering and maintaining effective working relations with all customers to include contractors, property owners, and the public; effectively utilize communication, negotiation and facilitation skills.
    • Any acceptable combination of experience and education which qualifies the applicant for this particular position may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
    • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to an offer of employment or promotion.

    Additional Requirements

    • This position requires considerable independent judgment in accomplishing assigned duties within established guidelines.
    • Requires the ability to function as a team member and must be adaptable to performing effectively under moderate to high levels of stress.
    • Requires frequent travel throughout the City and extensive contact with the City Managers office, City Council, department heads, Board and Commission members, employees, citizens, contractors, federal agencies, and a variety of outside agencies and organizations.
    • This is an exempt position.
    • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
