Minimum Qualifications
The DTPW classification of DTPW Facilities Equipment Technician performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to the provisions of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol regulations. Preference will be given to applicants in the Transport Workers Union bargaining unit.
Tests Required
TRAINING PROCESS: A limited number of trainee positions will be available. Applicants in the DTPW TWU bargaining unit positions will be selected by seniority based upon the number of available trainee positions. Those selected will enter the classification of DTPW Facilities Equipment Technician in Trainee status. Classroom and on-the-job training will last approximately fifty-two (52) weeks. At the completion of training, a written examination will be given wherein students must demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter.
Seniority points will be added to the score of Miami-Dade County employees qualifying on the competitive examination at the rate of 1/2 (.50) point per year of continuous, full-time service in the County to a maximum of ten years of service or five points.
Trainees who pass the test will have completed training successfully. DTPW TWU bargaining unit employees (trainees) who successfully complete the training program will be placed by seniority order, with probationary status, into available vacancies. DTPW TWU bargaining unit employees completing the training program but not placed, will return to their former classification. They will be placed on a waiting list and will receive preference by seniority order for future available DTPW Facilities Equipment Technician positions. The eligibility list and waiting list will remain valid as set forth in the Personnel Rules for the Classified Service. In accordance with labor protective agreements, the Department of Transportation and Public Works employees in certain represented positions will be given preference for these positions.

Applicants will be notified via DTPW Training Instructor of the date, time, and location of the post-examination. The doors to the test facility will close promptly at the time indicated. No one will be admitted for registration after the doors of the test facility have been closed. Promptness is required. Photo identification, such as a Driver license, is required to be admitted to the written examination.

This position performs skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and preventive maintenance on transit facilities, including buildings, stations, maintenance garages, and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include inspecting, maintaining, and repairing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, structural, and other building systems to ensure facilities remain safe, reliable, and fully operational.
Duties also include operating specialized tools and equipment, performing general construction and facility repairs, responding to emergency maintenance needs, and supporting the overall upkeep of transit properties. The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency across multiple building trades, the ability to perform physically demanding work, and the capability to work independently on routine assignments. More complex projects are completed under the guidance of a supervisor or skilled technician and are reviewed to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with applicable standards.
