About the Position

This position is with the Defense Health Agency DHA located at Fort Eisenhower Augusta, GA. This position is a multi-provider dental office with duty hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Help

Perform inter-oral procedures as directed by dentist. Take preliminary impressions for study models, removes sutures, places and removes rubber dams, perio-packs, matrix bands, and wedges. Operate dental X-ray equipment. Receive and schedule patients for treatment. Prepare and arrange all instruments and materials needed for each treatment. Sterilize instruments, materials, equipment, and prepare surgical trays. Take and record blood pressure and pulse of oral surgery patients before and after treatment. Aid in the training of trainee dental assistants and students.

Conditions of Employment

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination as determined by a completed background investigation. This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from or in accordance with the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification, e.g., ALS, does not supersede BLS. This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. Lifting up to 40 pounds may be required. This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency-type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations. Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions. This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons. Documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire. This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing. Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement for Dental Assistant Radiology Certification Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must:

  1. Have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education.
  2. Be certified as radiographers in their field.

Specialized Experience

One year of specialized experience which includes providing chair-side assistance, supporting a dental specialist by performing intra-oral procedures, operating dental X-ray equipment, and charting. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade level position in the federal service, GS-04.

Education

Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in a dental assistant or dental hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hours of courses in radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation health safety and protection, X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques, darkroom and processing techniques, and film mounting.

Combination of Education and Experience

A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years, total semester hours minus 60, by 60. Add the two percentages.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
