Job Summary/Basic Functions

Under general supervision of the Dental Program Coordinator. This position will provide assistance to a Oral Surgeon, resident, or dental student during procedures which includes seating and preparing patients for treatment, recording of medical history, measuring pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and ensure patient comfort, assurance and support. Assist in the care of handling of patients during dental treatment which involves setting up, missing, and passing of surgical instruments and materials, taking radiographs, patient education and giving post-operative instructions, cleaning and disinfecting treatment areas after procedures. The importance of this position is that the incumbent interacts with faculty, residents, students, and patients on both skillful and professional levels providing a necessary service of dental assistance.

LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry, Oral Surgery Department is seeking motivated applicants for the position of Dental Assistant 1 or 2

  • Assist oral surgeons, residents, and dental students with the chair-side treatment of patients

  • Takes and records vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure

  • Gives intra-oral instructions and demonstrations of oral hygiene procedures.

  • Greet and sit patients

  • Updates and maintains patient records

  • Answering phones and scheduling appointments

  • Assist with maintaining stock cabinet

  • Assist with checking inventory and ordering supplies when needed

  • Other duties as assigned

Type of experience required to perform the job: no experience for DA1, For DA 2, one year experience or training as a dental assistant or dental hygienist.

Compensation:

There is a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of

  • $15.05 per hour for Dental Assistant 2 title
  • $14.06 for Dental Assistant 1 title

Additional compensation

  • $1.00 Longevity Pay for hours worked only.
  • $2.25 per hour worked available for candidates that hold a current DANB (Dental Assisting National Board) certification.
  • $1.50 for EDDA certification (Expanded Dental Duty Dental Assistant).
  • This is a Civil Service Position.
  • Pre-employment Drug testing and Criminal Background check are required.
