Position Summary:

The Dean of Students is a non-administrative position responsible for assisting the Principal and Associate Principal to maintain an orderly and safe school environment for all students. The Dean of Students is responsible for supporting the administration in handling student discipline issues. The Dean of Students is expected to complete and document investigations thoroughly, contact parents and collaborate with school site student services staff to develop interventions and support for students who may have violated the code of conduct. The Dean of Students will also proactively work with students and families to improve the school environment to maximize the level of inclusion and belonging for all students.

Qualifications:

  • At least three years of K-12 teaching experience or equivalent human services/development experience
  • Prior experience in student supervision
  • Experience working with diverse populations of youth and young adults. Past experience in establishing and maintaining productive, collaborative relationships with students and families.
  • Relates to students with mutual respect while carrying out a positive and effective disciplinary program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work cooperatively with school personnel in protecting the physical and emotional health and welfare of students and staff.
  • In coordination with the Principal and Director of Student Services, develop a plan for family and student engagement related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Models use of restorative practices as a proactive and responsive approach to disciplinary issues along with standards of ethics, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
  • Assists the administration in providing student supervision in the school.
  • Implements proactive strategies to expand student engagement in order to increase students' sense of belonging.
  • Maintains data related to attendance, referrals, disciplinary actions and monitoring intervention progress and goal attainment.

  • Supervises students on campus before and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Monitors and organizes attendance functions; prepares letters, calls parents, and attends meetings as needed, regarding absent or tardy students; provides leadership for attendance improvement efforts.
  • Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings and MLSS Team meetings.
  • Completes training as directed such as PBIS, Restorative Practices, Crisis Prevention and Intervention, etc.
  • Provides individual and group guidance for students to support positive decision-making.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to ten pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
  • Ability to reach in all directions and bend/stoop to store and retrieve files
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
  • Ability to move throughout the building
  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
